Switching from MPH to KPH

Hi, I yet to buy a civic but have just heard that the MPH to KPH switch is now disabled.

Is that true? I do a lot of driving between the South and North of Ireland where of course being able to swich betwwen miles and kilometers would be very handy.

Thanks for your feedback.

Not that I'm aware of. I'm based in Dublin and I got my 1.8ES back at the end of May and the MPH/KPH button works on that. I can't think of any reason why they'd go to all the trouble of removing or diasabling them since then.
Did you buy the car in the North? Get a good deal?

I've havn't as yet, I'm in Cork and will be ordering soon to try and get one for early 2007. I looked into ordering from the North but the blasted VRT has us screwed - it makes the car more expensive to import in to the South.

Disabled or is it that there is no mph/kmph switch on the 07 version maybe? Can somebody with an 07 civic tell us?
You can still do it via the menu I'd imagine but you have to stop the car (and put the handbrake on) to change the setting.

I think you're the only other member of this site that I've been able to find in the Republic. I've been away for the last few weeks though so maybe a few others have joined since.
I had to go to Cork to pick up the 1.8ES because I'd been waiting 4 months for a Garage in Dublin to get one in and the date had slipped back to the end of JULY! Kevin O'Leary in Bandon in Cork happened to have one coming in in Nighthawk black at the end of May so I snapped it up. Fle down on Ryan Air and drove back up.
The VRT is a killer! We should be taken to court by the EC for it. What really annoys me is that you have to bay VRT on equipment that makes the car safer. So VSC on the Focus in England is STŁ250 but in Ireland it's €1250!! It's shocking.
Anyway, If you're looking to buy in Cork I really can't fault Kevin O'Leary on their service. The whole deal was problem free and so far so has the car.

Funnily enough that was who I was thinking of buying from. There is another dealer in Cork City but he has just moved to a nice brand new showroom so I doubt if he would even give up a pair of free mats!

I have spoken to a guy there and he was very helpful. The only problem is a test drive is as rare as finding hen's teeth! So may have to buy blind. Just hope it will be worth it.

Spud,
Is it the 1.4 or the 1.8 you were looking for? What spec? I don't think youcan get the EX or the diesel here yet for some reason. At least that was the case back when I was looking around.
I can't imagine there'd be a problem getting a test drive in the 1.4 but the 1.8's might be a lot harder to find. The spec doesn't make much of a difference. I thought the 1.4 was a bit underpowered as you could imagine but it moved the car ok. The 1.8 is a brilliant angine. The ride in the car is quite firm but I'm used to that from my last car.
Would have loved to have gone for the diesel but the tax every year would have been a killer and as I said before, it wasn't even an option. Any luck getting a test drive up North maybe? Or if you're up in Dublin at some stage?

Dave

Thanks, it's nice to know that this is still included. Maybe the car that this was reported on was faulty.

Raetgen

I'm after the 1.8 maybe the se exec or the es cant decide yet. I would love the diesel too. The dealer told me he doubts it will come to Ireland unless they make a smaller Peugeot sized diesel to beat the high tax.

Ya I could get a drive in a 1.4 but the dealer advised against it if I was after the 1.8 as there is no comparrison. I suppose it would give you a general feel though on handling etc.

I'm in the north in a couple of weeks so may def look for a drive up there now.

Cheers

A previous thread on KPH/MPH switch seemed to identify that it is only those models with MPH as standard, ie UK spec, which have the switch.

I was about to say right hand drive, but of course Eire is also right hand drive.

LHD cars do not have the switch and as far as I know they can't be changed even from the menu you open by pressing "i" for a few seconds.

Spot on Copycat, and that's particularly worrying for me as I was thinking of bringing the car back to the UK with me should I get a new Job I'm going for there....

I wonder if it could be done with a software update? For your car, I mean. If you explain your situation to a dealer, they'll at least look into it.

Well I hope that function is still there when I come to buy or a software fix is available.

It would be very easy to get stopped for speeding abroad as at least with a conventional speedo you can read both mph and kph to get a rough comparison.

It does seem strange to either not include or disable this function, it can t relate to too much of a cost saving to Honda. Don't Toyota include this on the Yaris, I presume Renault do to on the Scenic and Modus.

Hi Spud and Raegten!!

Just checked the civinfo map and there appears to be only one other member based in Ireland, in the North.

You should add yourselves to the map and it should encourage others to do so!

You can find the map here

Thank TT Degs for that one as he started the map!!

P.S. Degs, do I get commission for that mention?

Indeed strange that we can not set the car to MPH, like we never go to the UK !? we live just next to the UK!
Should be in the software

I believe it is a legal requirement that cars with MPH display can display either simultaneously or via a switch, the speed in Kp/h, however the reverse is not a requirement. The regulation is primarily in place should the UK switch to metric, not I suspect very likely.

As you know if they don't have to do it they won't!
