AC/Heater Air Conditioning Too Warm

Hello,

I own a NHB Civic Type S and I've found my air conditioning not cold at all...

Armed with the knowledge from civinfo wiki about air conditioning and information from other civic owners about their air con I took my car to the Honda service department. I told the guy my air con isn't cold at all so he tested it out and he said everything seems to be working fine, well obviously it'll be fine its cold today, but on a hot day the cabin temperature never falls or so it seems.

I told him how my cousin's car (Civic EX) is freezing cold and he said it should be like that, its faulty and a sign of it over-working... and then he got the thermometer, stuck it in my air vent and it started blowing at 6c.

Is it because my car is black so it is warmer than other coloured cars, is my air conditioning faulty or is it just me?

I had my Civic on vacation in the south of France a couple of weeks ago. Outside temperatures were above 30 degrees C, but the AC had no problem cooling down the car in 5-10 minutes even if it was parked in the sun for several hours and freakin' hot when starting.

Mine's alabaster silver but I owned a black Opel Vectra before I bought the Civic. I can't really say that I did notice any difference between the two cars when it comes to inside temperatures when in the sun.

What settings do you have it on?

well i was in the car for 3 hours yesterday so you could say i tried everything. Generally, i had it on 21 fan speed 2 since having it on any setting made no difference. I put it on full blast with manual AC on and LO settings. I even tried Auto...

This may be where you are going wrong. Fan speed 2 will not blow enough to cool the cabin down.

It works best in full Auto. Set a cool temperature (19 or so) and let it do the work. It will blow the right amount in the right places, and will even put recirc on when needed to further cool the cooled air.

When the actual temperature in the cabin is a long way from want you want, it will go a bit wild to try and reach your selected temperature. But as the difference reduces, it will reduce the fan speed. If the difference increases again, it will increase the fan speed.

Auto and LO is just a bit crude - it forces maximum cooling with maximum fan speed.

Try full Auto for a bit and see how it copes. You can see a graph of the control system in action here: Climate Control - Civinfo Wiki

I have the NHB civic (5 door) and have no problem with my air con. In fact I find if I set it much below 18 after 10 mins or so I have to turn it up a little as it blows icy cold. It does get cold in the back of the car as well, as I've had my kids complaining that they are cold.

Its normally set at fan speed 1 most of the time.

Did you mean that you had it set at 21?

Well I set it to 21c, 2x fan speed seeing that nothing really works but at least it keeps the humidity down. I'll try it on auto next time i do a long distance journey. I'm usually sweating with the air con on

I've had AirCon in my last 5 cars and this one does appear to be the least powerful or perhaps not interpreting what is required very well.

I find I have to coax it sometimes, especially if it has sat in the sun for a while. It definately works because holding my hand in front of the vents is certainly an icy blow (as previous cars) but I think the fan speed on auto should perhaps be a notch or 2 up when the temperature difference is considerable. Yes it does go "bananas" when there is a vast temperature difference but it calms down far too early.

I have an accurate digital interior thermometer (not positioned in the sunlight or in line of any direct airflow) and that always shows about 2°C above what I have set when the system is at idle having presumably made the decision it's at the set temperature.

On a hot day, if I want the interior to be about 21°C then I normally set it to 19°C. If I leave it set on 21°C then it does sometimes creep up to 24°C and it does feel too warm.

sparda_gm, I think that maybe you are setting it incorrectly. The system is a little confusing as to how the AC should be turned on. Check your owner's manual and all will become clear. Having said that I use full auto all the time and it works perfectly, just have to adjust the temp +/- a degree or so sometimes.

I use full auto all the time and have no problems. Usually set aroud 19 / 20. I find it gets cold quite quickly as well, even when its been sat in the sun all day.

Could be your dust/pollen filter is too much dirty and reduces air flow.

As an good example, I had same issue on my old Civic. At first thought AC was broken, but it turned to be very dirty dust filter. Since old Civic had only 3 fan speeds, before filter was changed blowing on max speed (3) it was blowing less air than nafter filter change on 1 (lowest setting to actually blow).

As said, may be the same issue you have...

If you want to select a specific temperature just leave it on auto and don't faff with fan speeds.

If you are too warm, turn the temperature down a bit at a time.

I used to have mine set to 19 fan speed 2, but a friend suggested 22/23 and just let it remove the moisture, the system does not have to work so hard and it seems to be better doing this on very hot days, the car feels cooler much faster. Also make sure the mode setting is at face and feet, not windscreen, also check the glove box vent is shut.

But the sun sensor gets me, as soon as the sun pops out from behind a cloud the temp of the aircon drops suddenly, sending a burst of cold air up my trouser leg

i always keep the glovebox vent closed as i don't store anything in there anyway and don't need to blow through windscreen vent as it doesn't mist up anymore. I guess i'll let the computer do its job and hope it cools me down!
