Best Climate Setting

I would like to know the best climate setting. When my wife drives the car every thing is put into manual mode,i drive in auto mode and just turn the temp. up or down. But when doing this the air con is on is this always the case?.I would like just to get in the car and set the temperature without having to demist the screen, then to put warm air on my feet then to clear the screen again, even worse when its raining. Is there an optimum setting with no air con to keep the car at a set temp. without having to keep clearing the screen ?

I was wondering that exact thing today

I had to keep clearing the windscreen all the time today, I dont really want to keep the climate control on all the time as it uses more petrol (im a tight wad) I dont feel the option of screen and feet only is that good, they should have included just a screen option.

They have, there is a single button for it above the auto button. Its the same picture as normal, and when I turn it on an orange light comes on and it blows air at the screen?

Or am I misunderstanding you?

I know that button is there

But its very noisey and powerful to keep on all the time and its annoying when you have to keep switching it on and off every couple of minutes!

Well you asked

anyway i've read on here previously (not sure where) that the climate control being on all the time doesnt make that much difference to MPG, and I cant say I notice a difference and I have tried with and without over 2 tankfuls.

I usually put the window fan on on its own if the window is misted so it clears quickly and then just hit the Auto button which is set at 20 and it prevents the window from steaming up again.

i was doing the same thing running manual, due to being a tight wad, until i read a thread on here (Steamy windows (merged)) about what others do, and the general feeling was to leave on auto, it will demist as well as get to the temperature you want. If you did need that extra help then to use the windows/mirror heater button as well.

The one thing i have noticed is that i tend to have my temp on 26 at the moment, which when in auto blows out the bottom and side vents quite fast at first but then calms down, when i tried to lower it down to 22 the air-con kicked in and started to blow cold out the middle vents, therefore i think that even though you think the air-con is on its not working as hard as it would be on say 16 and probably assisting on De humidifying the inside thus aiding demisting.

I have hardly noticed any change in MPG too, still avg 54mpg after 4500 miles

I have mine on Auto but with manual fan speed usually on 2, then I just turn the temp up and down depending.

For me, I found that turning the a/c off helped the fuel consumption. I normally put £20 in and that last me for 150 miles but in my last run i got 160 with the a/c turned off for a couple of journeys....

doesn't changing the fan speed manually take it out of auto mode though?

26 is a good temp for me, got arthritis (diagnosed when 20, bummer but you make the best out of life, just gotta keep moving) you see so need the heat

Once the screen is demisted, put the climate on auto. It'll do the rest. I wish everyone would do that, then we don't have to keep repeating ourselves.

Yes, elfa has it cracked. Once demisted, the dry air in the car will keep the screen clear. The amount of fuel used by the aircon is tiny, not worth worrying about. Auto all the way....

Totally with Pottsy on this one. The amount of fuel used by the Aircon is negligable. A magazine tested such a thig a year or so ago (can't remember which one, autoexpress I think? ) and they found the mpg saving to virtually unrecordable in a modern energy effient engine, 1 or 2mpg different. And isnt the Civic meant to be one of the most efficient engines on the market? Don't think that having the climate off is going to make a huge difference.

Have my car set to Auto at 20, seems to be acceptable to both me and my passengers. Don't see the point of trying to out think the computer controlled temp sensor ladened climate system fitted to the car.

Yup, I also agree with Pottsy on this, sometimes though it can take longer time to get rid of the humid air inside, especially if you step in with wet clothes and hair (!).
Aircon doesn't consume in practice any extra fuel, it's so little, indeed nothing to worry about. I tested it last summer in 30C outside using Auto set to 21C, came down to 5,6 litres fuel consumption with steady 80 km/h on a 120 km trip.
