Temperature gauge

This morning I got to my car to find a covering of frost, suggesting that if its not 0 C then its not far off. I started the car and looked at the temp gauge to see 6 C!!!!

I then started my 15 mile journey to work, within 10 min I got the snow flake, 3 C a couple of min later it was on 1 C, and then 4 C and the 2 C and finally 1C.

Now Ive heard of sever weather fronts before but 3 in 15 miles????

Is anyone else noticing such extreme fluctuations?

I parked my car on the drive last night at about 10pm so plenty of time to acclimatise.

I was in a Toyota today and it did exactly the same. I suspect that it's the effect of going in and out of freezing fog - when the fog condenses onto the sensor, heat will be released, and when it is evaporated off again heat is lost. It may be even more complicated still, with super cooled water, but you'd need to talk to someone who fully understood all that stuff!

No, but I bet it was nearly foggy (technical eh?!). The water in the air is still close to coming out, so a warm probe (maybe only a degree warmer) may still get condensate on it - just like your car did overnight when it got covered in frost.

Indeed there is a strange problem with the temperature reading. On a cold day - when the car has been stood - it will overread and then over a mile or two the reading will drop degree by degree to the correct temperature. Strange - but true.

Every car Ive ever owened with a temp gauge does exactly the same thing.

Even in summer, remember that ?, it will read say 35 then after a couple of miles its down to 28. Dont worry just wait a bit before you start to believe it.

The car will warm up above the air temperature as it sits. All cars do. The light falling on it (even on an overcast day) will warm up the car to an extent.

When you start to drive, the airflow over the sensor should let it read the tru temperature. If you feel it is out, and you know what it shoul be, just callibrate it in the settings menu. Not many cars allow you to do that!

Even on main roads, the road will be warm from the friction from the tyres and the engines, so the air temp above them will be a little higher.

Also...

There was a huge temperature inversion today. On the ground it was 0C, yet at 500' or so (above the fog) it was 8C. On my way home, I go up a hill, and the temperature rose 4C. Might go to explain why it's so up and down at the mo.

sliiy place to put temp sensor i think , it will get to many false reads , my 307 only droped 1-2c from sat on drive to 20 or so mins later on the road because the sensor was on the mirror so it was expozed to the elements even when not moving , when there was ice on the car it was 0 or below not 5-6 then drop as it get cold air on it , yer ive had big temp faluts like you say good ice on the car and car not in the shade and sliiy temps of 5-8c then after 5 mins of traveling it goes down to +1 or -1. another poor idea from honda.

Actually, putting the sensor on the mirror is not a good idea. My old Tempra had it there too, in rain it showed the Wet Bulb Temp. and not the Dry Bulb; which we should be interested in..
And under sunlight, it showed a rocketing temp.
I am comparing the temp. display with occasional tempi diplays that we have on the roads or urban places. It is fairly accurate. 1-2 deg. difference generally, which is very normal.

I have noticed my temp changes after I have driven off the driveway and down the road, I put it down to the fact that on driveway the car is quite sheltered.

Years ago I remember my car's temperature rising dramatically when it was parked. Usually in a wood or down a lane. At night. Always with my girlfriend. Was it a fault?

I'm not a meteorologist so I don't need to know exact temperatures, rough figure is enough for me. I don't think the problems anyone is experiencing here is anything unique to the civic, other makes and models have the sensor fitted in roughly the same place. Plus with the temp sensr fitted in close proximity to the engine its always going to read slightly higher than the true air temp.

Ummm.. It is just the opposite, in fact.. I read larger deviations from the actual in the Tempra (sensor in the mirror).
If I would say anything about a sensor in the Civic, it is the inside temp. sensor, which I believe that should be shielded from the inside. I see that it is affected by the heat behind the dashboard and is inclined more towards cooling. (I personally do not complain about that because I like cold..)
