Safety Cameras Snoopers and other guards against speed detecting...

I have seen on this site a wireing howto for a Snooper. From a google search I understand that a snooper is a radar detector...

What are peoples experiences from such devices... Do they work ? Which brand and model is the best ?

And what can they actually detect ? Raders operated by police with direct and manual targeting ?

Or is what it does actually just to scrample the incoming raders making them useless ?

What other speed detecting mechanisms can we guard ourselves against ? Laser ? Photo ?

Regarding photo, I once saw a tv-shop commercial abut a spray to put on the license plate, that worked by not reflecting the light so that the license didn't make it to the photos. Does anyone have any experience with this ?

What does the law say about using such devices ?

Looking forward for some interesting answers...

Jakob,

It all depends on the devices in use and the law in your country.

Here in the UK, we have fixed cameras (all sorts - they use radar, loops in the road, average speed measurement and so on) and we have mobile laser vans. There are a host of GPS devices that know where you are and know where the fixed cameras are, and beep when you're near and going too fast. Laser detection is tricky (because generally when you've detected it they've already got your speed); but there are laser "jammers" available which are sort of legal here (but only because there has been no proper test case).

I have an aerosol of Photo Blocker. Have'nt used it yet, I asked on the Forum last week if anyone had tried it, but no responce.

elfa, I think that stuff doesn't work.

The coolest device I reckon is the parking aid, that is sold as a parking aid, and works as a parking aid, but also jams laser. Excellent!

I can thoroughly recommend a Road Angel Plus - tells you the limit as you approach a camera, warns you of laser van sites as a "blackspot" and has an internal battery so you don't need to have wires trailing all over the dash. This last bit is very good considering where honda have put the cigarette lighter on the civic

It also warns if you are being targetted by laser but by the time you have reacted, it will be too late anyway

... but not the Road Angel Compact. I got one of those and had to return it. It has a very bright display - even in sunlight. Trouble is there's no dimmer, so at night it's so bright you can't see where you're going.

Ah - you might have snags with the RA plus then as it has the same problem.... Have just checked the unit, and there is no way of doing it in the menus either

Yes - but the RA Plus is dimmer than the compact, so it is less of a problem. The compact is seriously bright!

I ave a Snooper S4 NEO (had it about 2 years now) has been bloody brilliant, the only problem is where to site it in the Civic. I also have a TomTom Oe with the gpsworld camera database on which I tend to use instead now, only the one device. I find they are superb if you are driving in an area you aren't familiar with.

I've had a "new" Road Angel for 4 years and I can thoroughly recommend it. I read lots of reviews on detectors before I purchased and the Road Angel ticked all the right boxes.

I did think about that but it's right by the side curtain air bag and in the case of a smash it could (very unlikely I know) become a missile as the airbag goes off. Hence I never fit them there just in case.
I have to admit it does look tidier there though.

Does anyone know if the Road Angel Compact fits into the gap under the stereo in the civic? (the one with the silver flip down cover)

Only if it does then i'm considering getting one and hardwiring it in there. It would be out of the way and I could close the lid rather than remove the detector when parked up. Don't want to spend the cash if it doesn't fit though

on my old accord i had my road angel hidden away in a compartment pretty much like the civic has and then ran an external gps aerial which was tucked and virtually hidden on the top of the dashboard. Worked a treat.

The only trouble with the civic is that the compartment is totally enclosed but i dont know if you could get to it by drilling some holes but would mean taking the dash apart. Perhaps someone who has taken dash apart already could confirm if possible or not

I just drive at or under the speed limit. Works well for me and is 100% reliable, and cheaper than any of the above solutions. And safer, too.
