Stuck TMC events

5 days ago, there was an accident on the M1 which was reported on the TMC. It was a long stretch on the southbound carriageway.

The problem is that the accident was cleared, but the event stayed on the TMC. For 5 days! So everyone going up the M1 with TMC was being told to go on a long diversion.

So I emailed TMC here:

TMCForum.com :: TMC FAQ

And got a reply saying that it was down to the provider that Honda use. Which is Trafficmaster.

A couple of days later, a kind gent from Trafficmaster took the time to write this:

Quote:
Thankyou for your enquiry concerning the obsolete RDS-TMC event on the M1. You should see that this event has now been cleared from the TMC broadcast. The TMC broadcast contains two types of event; congestion events and incidental events such as accidents and roadworks. The data for congestion events is autonomously collected processed and broadcast without human intervention. Incidental events on the other hand are processed by our team of traffic analysts 24 hours per day. On this occasion the accident on the M1 was not cleared in accordance with our event management procedures.

I apologise for the inconvenience and concern that this has caused you. I hope that with further use of the Honda navigation system you will see that this was an isolated incident and will find the traffic data dependable.

Xxx Xxxxxxx,
Product Manager
Trafficmaster PLC
So the lesson learned? When playing TMC roulette, TMCjam.gif events are automated and should be trustworthy, whereas TMCacc.gif and TMCworks.gif events are manually deleted so may be old news.

Thanks for the info.

One of the reasons why I purchased a TrafficMaster Q-Busta to supplement the built in system.

I find the Q-Busta more accurate as it reads data directly from the roadside beacons and not via radio stations which I find tends to be delayed.

The bonus of the built in system though is that it gives a bigger picture whereas the Q-Busta only works within 'earshot' of the beacons and only reports a 10 mile radius.

Horses for courses
