So is the point of the mic level screen (I know it's for Honda techs) to show you how loud you should speak or actually to set the mic level parameter purely by speaking?

If I talk normally (so my Mrs can hear me from the front passenger seat) then the test voicemail is unrecognisable; if I talk loudly (so my Mrs can hear me from the boot ) then it muffles out quite a lot.

I know logically that half way between should be just right but wondering will I get better results if I also pull out the foam & replace it with the electrical tape fix... Trying to optimise it....

Oops, better go let her out of the boot... she's been in there overnight!

'tisa Samsung D900 slider.

All the other bits all work ok, and today there was no problem at all.

So what your saying is that there may not be a problem with the HFT after all?

It may be Lady H 'copping a deafun' on purpose

I've got one of those at home as well, I think she calls it 'selective hearing'.

I then had to stop, turn off the engine and then talk to the lovely Lady H using the bit of the 'hands free' that Millie didn't understand.
I believe that in this situation you can do a "Transfer" HFT command.

Cheers.

Lets find that manual!

I experience the following.

1. Car commands, like "CD play" , "traffic event list" and "how long to destination" work fine. 1 out of 20 may miss.

2. No-one has complained about quality of HFT when talking to them.

3. The voice recognition for the phone sucks.
Two to Four attempts often needed.
Eg "Call home" turns into "three" "five" "hash" or something.

I am guessing the phone system is completly seperate with its own voice recog software that may not be as good as the other system.

Is this right?

I find the same thing.

I say "phone status".

The HFT says "*3#, would you like to dial"

I say "phone status", a little louder

The HFT says "5#3#, would you like to dial"

I shout "phone status"

The HFT says "3*4#, would you like to dial"

I say "Oh for F#*# sake!"

The HFT says "Pardon"

It really is rubbish.

It's an April 2007 and I think it has the fix done - a rectangle of foam with 2 cut outs stuck over the microphone.

Mine is a March 2007 and all that had was some black gauze stuff with cutouts. Certainly not foam - I added the foam myself.

Maybe not foam then, but a soft rubbery compound, maybe 2mm thick. I read the Honda fix in the FAQ's and thought mine had already been done - now I'm not so sure.

Personally, I don't think the fix is a long term solution. Mine seems to be slowly getting worse again. Maybe the foam deteriorates with time? Time to add some more to see if it works!

The basic fix using foam was to ensure that the air gap between the microphone housing and the plastic grill microphone holes was closed completely.

The 2mm gauze doesn't close the gap so the microphone also picks up background noise from within the roof area.

So how does the mic look with new cars? Can anyone take the cover off and take a simple pic? Anyone had their mic replaced (recently - I remember initially people were getting a like for like which still needed a fix)?

still works ok though

I'll take a photo of mine. Although its not a new car, the mic has more than just the black gauze I've seen on other photos. On top of the black gauze there seems to be a black bitumen type layer around the outside edge and running across the middle.

Mine is appalling - given up with voice tags altogether - it will recognize some numbers, but always either misses off the beginning zero, or puts it in twice! I was so busy shouting at it earlier this month, I now have a speeding fine to pay - I'd have been better risking the phone useage fine - far less chance of getting caught! Think I should sue Honda for goods not of merchantable quality?
