Hi All,
Picked up my first civic (2008 2.2 ES) on Saturday. Great car but with one small issue (Which I didn't notice on the test drive Every now and again the radio display will show all of the characters faintly with the ones which should be showing slightly brighter. Once this happens it normally stays like this for the rest of the journey. If I turn the ignition off and on it sometimes, but not always, goes back to normal (Completely black background). Here's a picture when it's in its "faulty" state: ![]() I've tried changing the dash brightness but it doesn't help. Anyone got any ideas of where the problem might be and if it's an easy fix? Thanks, Adam |

This has been reported few times before, but nobody found the real cause of the problem. Few members had their head unit replaced under warranty. I suggest that you take it back to the dealers to sort it!
Just a few posts reporting the same problem: Radio/Aircon Display problem LCD aircon radio display Radio display gone mental |

Thanks for the links.
I got the car from a small independent garage and the supplied warranty doesn't cover audio equipment. I'll give disconnecting the battery a go but it looks to me like it's either the display itself, head unit or a bad connection somewhere |

First of all, this doesn't affect the sound or functioning of the head unit, but it's irritating! This was faulty on collection, you just couldn't see it as it doesn't appear all the time, i.e. it didn't show on a test ride.
Don't you have a right to return a car in the UK in a short period from buying if something is not functioning right? Tell them you'll return it if they don't fix it. |

This issue does not just happen... it starts to appear over long period of time. The display is failing and there is no fix other than replacement of the display.
I would go back to them and cause more of a fuss... Threaten trading standards etc. You have only had the car 3 days! |

Dammmnn I've got the exact same problem. I've just left it because I don't want to risk moving things about and making it worse.
Used to happen all the time before and now it's calmed down. Happens like once every few days. |

Weirdly I only saw the problem during first two days of having the car. Since last Tuesday I haven't seen it once (With 2 or more journeys in the car per day).

I've taken a good look at the radio display unit few months ago, all it does is take power and data from the radio headunit. This are the wires that go from head unit to the display:
D1 BRN Audio-HVAC subdisplay unit (SUB DISP GND) D2 PNK Audio-HVAC subdisplay unit (SUB DISP 5 V) D3 ——— Not used D4 YEL Audio-HVAC subdisplay unit (SUB DISP RST) D5 PUR Audio-HVAC subdisplay unit (SUB DISP CLOCK) D6 ORN Audio-HVAC subdisplay unit (SUB DISP DATA) D7 BLU Audio-HVAC subdisplay unit (SUB DISP CE) D8 GRY Audio-HVAC subdisplay unit (SUB DISP SHIELD) D9 PNK Audio-HVAC subdisplay unit (SUB DISP LCD BL-) D10 LT GRN Audio-HVAC subdisplay unit (SUB DISP LCD BL+) D4-D7 are data feed for the chip. Don't think many of you are interested how the chip works, but in few lines: the data is send in as 44 off 8 bit words, with each bit coresponding to one of the segments of display and turns it on or off (e.g. number place on the screen has 7 segments, so 7 coresponding bits turning on or of in a right combination will make it apear as a number from 0-9, with all of them turned on number 8 will apear). If it still shows correct data that means chip is still ok. ![]() All I can see going wrong here is the light getting too much voltage from time to time (should be D9-D10 responsible for that). Think the voltage regulator is placed in the head unit, so replacing the display won't help. Maybe a resistor should be placed on the light signal ![]() Anybody want to give second opinion??? |

My 07 2.2 civic has just started to do this with the occasional total black screen, which does clear itself for no apparent reason. Has anyone come up with a reason and repair for this as it appears to be a common fault.

Mine seems to have repaired itself. I only saw the issue for a couple of days after I picked up the car. Haven't seen it for the last 3 weeks or so. My guess would be it's something to do with the car standing for awhile before I bought it - slightly low battery voltage may be?
