TOMTOM Fitting?

Has anyone tried installing a TOMTOM (or similar) portable satnav using suction mounts on the flat area of the dash to the left (on RHD) of the radio/heater display?

I found the perfect place for my Garmin Nuvi was to use the flat area to the right of the speedo display. I stuck the surface mount supplied with the Nuvi and the suction works just fine.I can clearly see the satnav screen and reach it to alter any parameters easily. I previously had it stuck on the right hand side of the windscreen but the suction was not brilliant as the windscreen is curved there and it had a habit of falling off at the most awkward moment.

Yep! That exact spot works perfectly with my Nuvi 660 - very stable and no interference with existing displays!

I recall having seen a picture in this forum of a Tomtom suction mount at the same place. Some weeks ago.

I'd have thought a suction mount wasn't going to work terribly well on anything other than glass.

I (photos on this site) use a grill mount in the centre console and find it works really well (TomTom running on a rx5930).

I have my TomTom one v2 just laying on top of the cup holders.
That's a great place to have it, take tomtom out of bag, slide open the sliding thing that normally covers the cupholders, put tomtom there, slide the sliding thing against the tomtom... DONE

No extra suction things needed, tomtom is in arms reach and can't fall down.

I used the circular adhesive plate supplied with the Garmin (and yes, they do come off without marking when required!) and the suction mount is applied to this.

The result is a satnav which is very easy to refer to and does not impede forward vision - suits me very well anyway!

And one on the right.
The loose cable is the TMC. Another reason for putting on the right is that I can tuck the cables away neatly down the dash.

If I didn't want to retain my MicroFuzion Camera Detector then I would have mounted my Satnav on the right too!

I wouldn't be without it though - free updates for life each month, and it's a lot smarter than the Garmin (tracks average speeds through that type of speed restricted area etc.).

Just resurrecting this thread - I want to do exactly what Honda100 has done with my 'old' Navman. Can someone suggest
a) what material (some sort of rigid plastic?) to use that my suction cup will stick to, and
b) is there a way of sticking it to the dash so that it could be removed later with no marks?

Any suggestions are welcome!

Simon1. I used the black disc that comes with the Nuvi. I can't remember where I got mine, but you can purchase them from here: Suction Pad Dash Mount for GARMIN NUVI 350 660 670 680 on eBay, also Chargers Cables, Accessories Cables, GPS Devices, Consumer Electronics (end time 26-May-08 16:00:42 BST)

Garmin also sell them, https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=6290

When you take the sat nav off you can hardly see the disk and I guess that if you wanted to remove it something like WD40 would remove the glue from the dash.

I have been looking into Trekkers' solution but I found contradictional info on the internet about the coming off without marking, so I am reluctant to use an adhesive plate. Furthermore, there's info on this forum about thiefs looking for any signs in the car that there might be a navigation unit stored in the car, like a mark on the screen from the suction unit. I guess an adhesive plate may trigger them as well. Since I park my car in Amsterdam centre a lot, there's a lot of folk around that may be triggered to brake into my car, so I was looking for a solution that wouldn't leave any marks, and I found this: the Veripart Gps car cushion (sells for 25-30 euros)
Click the image to open in full size.
I've tried it once yesterday, and it actuallly works! The cushion is about 1.5 kg heavy and the bottom is made of a anti-slip rubber which keeps the cushon in place. The only thing I don't like about it is the looks of it. It is quite big and doesn't add to the flashy look of my civic.
Also, after the first time I used it, it actually did leave a vague circular mark on the dashboard. That may have to do with first time use. And I didn't clean the dashboard at forehand, althoug the "manual" says I should have. Will clean it and come back to that if you're interested.

I only found info in Dutch on the Internet (eg Veripart GPS Car Cushion - PDAshop.nl) but I think it must be available abroad as well.

I use a similar friction mount for my Garmin. Not very elegant, but:
- It works very well
- Leaves no trace
- Quick set up
- Unit can be put quite close to the driver

Anyone tried the Tomtom dash surface mounting kit?

TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - Dashboard Mount Disks for GO 730 Traffic

I've seen them on their website but not tried one yet.
