It seems that they do work by themselves, I know this might sound stupid, but if it is on when it is actually switched "off" could it burn out especially when the windows are fine?

It wont burn out, but this is perhaps a useful point to ask:

If one has a lot of heavy current electrical devices on, such as;
  1. Heated mirrors & rear window
  2. Fan
  3. Heater assistance (isn't there an electrical 'booster'?)
  4. Lights
  5. Fog lights
  6. Heated seats
does the alternator have enough output to supply all the current needed? I do know that some high specced Ford Focuses don't - and after a few mornings use of a lot of accessories on short journeys can suffer flat batteries.

I think we oil burner drivers are a bit better of than the petrol heads as we have a bigger stronger battery and system to get things going

The alternator should have enough power to supply the needed current by almost all those.
You may need all of them except for items 3 and 6 in a long, cold and foggy trip (which is supposed to last much longer because of the low travelling speed).
