Burning oil smell question...

I have a newish (1 month old) CTR... so far only has about 500 miles on the clock.

Have been driving it fairly carefully so far - wasn't planning to VTEC until I had reached the 625 miles (1000km) mark. However, accidently went into lift yesterday (a very easy thing to do!) and didn't stay in the band for long, prob just a few seconds. However, when I stopped at my destination a couple of mins later, I noticed the what smelt like burnt oil.

Is this normal? I was wondering if certain parts of the engine/high lift cams etc, hadn't been coated in oil properly yet, hence the smell? Was a bit worried, thats all!

P.S. I did check the oil last week and it seemed fine. However, it was difficult to see the level 'cos it was so clean! Plus surely it wouldn't have burnt any oil after 500 miles?!?

TBH I wouldn't worry too much, you were only on it for a while and I don't think it would make any difference as long as you don't drive round town with it permanently in the Vtec range

Got just over 3000 miles on mine, and I have a very long straight road coming down to my street, sometimes I give it a "little" on my way home, and as I get out of the car in the garage, there is also a slightly oily type smell, I think it's more or less to do with the extra heat in the exhaust, although don't quote me on this.

I would nt worry, I used the VTEC on the same day I got the car just to see if everything was working correctly. You will get a burning smell as everything is still new, the exhaust will give off a smell, so will the brakes. And if you over rev the engine on a hill start you may also smell the clutch burning, this is not advised as you can burn it out for good! I've now done 3500 miles in just over 3 months and it will improve.

Totally agree with your opinion on this one, cnicolini!
No reason to worry.
The smell is quite normal on a new car.

Subarus come with a protective coating in the engine bay to stop bits corroding while they are sat waiting to be shipped/sold. Not sure if honda do the same, but as others have said it should go away over time. If you are worried then you can always pop down to the dealer for reassurance/explanation.
