Wink Is it True?

I've heard from a fellow civinfo member that the civic 2.2 desiel engine is a de-tuned version of the Honda Accord 2.2 desiel engine that produces 170bhp. It's supposed to have been de-tuned down to 140bhp because the gearbox and driveshafts on the civic couldn't take the extra power. But if the R-type can handle 200bhp then surely the standard civic can handle 170bhp. Or is it down to the extra torque on the desiels that has the potential to shred gear boxes and snap drive shafts? I've also heard that civic owners are having their engines remapped or chipped back up to 170bhp. If so, arn't they in danger of damaging gearbox/shafts? Or perhaps this is just one of those stories that goes around from time to time. You know the sort of ones I'm on about... MADE-UP!!

As far as I'm aware the engine in the Accord has the same output.

I guess you could chip it aggressively even higher - like 190BHP, by mechanical modifications it's possible to get about 100 BHP from 1 litre in a diesel - as shown by recent biturbos, however I wouldn't do it for 2 reasons:

1. The Civic is a front-wheel drive car, and its 140(+)BHP is already close to the limit of what it can (reasonably) use, perhaps excluding the type-R

2. Honda must have had good reasons to limit the power - whatever these reasons are, nobody would like to have lower powered engines than the competitors. Thus, by chipping the car up you will be probably confronted with premature engine wear

BTW - the Accord is also rated at 140 BHP

firstly front wheel drive cars cope fine with 200bhp! if you look at the current car markets and there are a lot of front wheel drive cars with 180+hp.

the main reason they did not have it with more bhp was too keep it to a similar spec as the 1.8 petrol and not be a similar speed as the type-r.

Perhaps, but why did they leave the Accord at 140BHP then?

edit) I know there are FWD cars with 180+hp, which does not say that it's reasonable

Honda only produce one diesel engine at the moment... and that's the 2.2 140bhp diesel... it is fantastic for all round reliability, economy and power. It's only now that they have realised that some people want more power so are developing the DOHC i-CTDi that is said to have around 180bhp in the new Accord.

And yes... I have also heard that the 2.2 was "toned down" as when it was 1st tested it was trying to rip itself out of the engine housing in the Civic... either that or they made a stronger engine housing!!!

Leon Cupra and Astra VXR are 2 perfect examples of front wheel drive cars that have over 180bhp - MUCH more at 240bhp!

Did you drive them? I did (the Leon) and believe me it can't really handle its power well. Horsepower isn't everything. Compare the Leon Cupra to a 200+hp rear-wheeler like the BMW 1 and you'll feel the difference...

The engine output of the Civic was almost certainly governed by emission considerations.

The high output Alfa's and Vag's have dpf's-the 140bhp 2.2 does'nt require that for UK as far as I understand
