CDTI, CTDI, TDCI, TDI.

Four different brand names for the same thing (except old VW-engines with PD instead of CR).

Sorry, I know it's not the issue here but I've looked up to find VTEC stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. Should it be VVTLEC?

Basically years ago most passenger car diesels were indirectly injected, they used a rotary injector pump to inject into an anti chamber (called a "ricardo gomet") off from the main cylinder heard.

(this is opposed to gasoline engines that inject at low pressure into the intake manifold)

The reason for this was that injecting directly into the top of the cylinder itself caused very violent uncontrolled spontaneous combustions and the engine was noisy and rattly. However it was much more efficient than the indirect injection method that had considerable pumping losses down teh narrow throat from the anti chamber.

Then with the advent of more advanced electronic means of injection timing we saw the first generation of modern direct injection. eg VW/Audi TDi and rover group L series ect.

THEN a big advance the rotary got done away with in favour of two much more advanced systems

PD (VW Audi) these are electronic unit injectors i.e the injectors themselves do the pumping like hypodermic syringes

Common Rail (almost everybody else) uses a reservoir of fuel under pressure that can be drawn from and advanced electronically controlled injectors.

PD advantages can inject at very high pressures hence much more efficient combustion. Disadvantages is generally less refined and the injectors themselves are noisy (make a clack clack sound).

Common Rail cannot inject at as high a pressures as PD engines as it is not safe to do so. However common rail can do things like pre injection to make the rise in temperature and pressure much less sudden and this has a big boost to refinement.

Interesting bit of info. Having owned both now, is it then fair to say that PD is more fuel efficient than common rail? I can say I have found it so.
