Ishift happy or not?
I am pondering over changing my car for an I shift version. i dont really want to get rid of mine as I love having the diesel but I have always liked to have an auto gearbox. Never been a fan of manual. But I would like to know mainly what people think of it as I know there has been a lot of people disliking it as well as others saying its very good.
I havent driven one yet but trying to arrange a test drive soon. |

Test drive first. If you like it, go for it.
I just borrowed a company car yesterday which had auto box. As I got used to my i-shift Civic, now the normal auto box feels weired. It feels like slipping a lot to make it smooth, and wasting a lot of power. I came to like the direct feel of i-shift even though it isn't as smooth as auto in some situations. Go for it as once you are used to the I-shift you will appreciate how brilliant it is and also how much more fun it is.
If you buy new you will get the latest version but if you buy used make sure you get the upgraded version as it is far superior to the earlier ones |

Well, I really like I shift, and find it real good.
That being said, I shift is *not* auto gearbox, and it is a bit different due to that. I would suggest to take longer test drive, and see if it suits you. Also, due to coming from diesel engine, petrol might seem 'powerless' as you need to rev it more. As said - go take longer test drive, so in the end you wouldn't feel disappointed. |

The only way to tell is if the car has got the upgrade is if it is virtually brand new, it should then have the latest upgrade.
If it is an older car, it should change gear quite quickly, especially from 1st to 2nd. The older software meant it took at least 1 sec for this to happen. I am another owner who is happy with the i-shift gearbox, especially now is has been updated. Just remember it is a manual gearbox with an automatic clutch, not a proper autobox which some people expected. Make sure you have a long test drive on all sorts of roads, using 'Auto' and 'Manual', this is the only way to find out if you can live with the way it works. |

Some of us think it's not perfected yet - some love them to bits it seems.
I have been driving auto's since my Rover 2000 which was a K reg when the K was at the end and I think the i-shift is not a patch on a conventional auto. I know it's not supposed to be but I just feel awkward with it and it has put me in some dangerous situations when I think it shold have changed gear but failed to do so, or when it did it was too late. Try and get a good test drive of one and make up your own mind, do not be swayed by any comments here including mine. |

I am very happy with my 07 Vivid Blue 1.8 SE I Shift. The performance and fuel consumption is good. Not quite as smooth as a full auto box but quite acceptable. I would never consider having a diesel.

On the auto/I-shift discussion, remember that conventional (torque converter + epicyclic gears) autos have evolved to the present (wonderfully good in the best cases) state over many years - and are still improving. CVTs as used in the Jazz are now vastly better than early (Volvo and Daf Variomatic) system, though still really only suited to modest power handling. The 'automated manual' whether it is DSG or I-shift is relatively young. It is bound to need a few 'generations' to get to a level of development similar to a conventional auto - during which time its shortcomings will be quite acceptable to some, and totally unacceptable to others(!) - just as conventional autos were through the 1960s and 1970s etc. I think that most people now accept that conventional autos are pretty good, and its hardly possible to buy a 'luxury' car with a manual gearbox now. |

I personally tried and hated, but others seem to like it, BTW, if you want to move anywhere with an Auto, don't buy a jazz (it was horrid and felt like the car was made of lead, other than that an ok car
I would ONLY ever have an auto in a large engined/ powerful car, but in a 2.2, no way, not nearly enough power for an Auto IMHO. Try before you buy |

I took delivery in December 07 so have probably got the latest software. In Auto mode it's as gentle or as mad as you want it to be - dependent on the position of your right foot. In Manual mode it's a bit of an animal - 39mph in 1st, 64 in 2nd, 94 in 3rd - and it sounds fantastic. ...and then there's the joy of cruise control. resume at 28mph and it'll gently accelerate upto wherever you left it, automatically changing through the gears. Just a shame I've got so lazy: Auto Lights, Auto wipers, Auto Gears, even the indicators auto-cancel after three flashes. I couldn't even consider going back to a manual. My only criticism would be the DSG changes gear faster, then again I found it harder to live with than I-shift when I test drove a Seat. I knew within 2 minutes that the Civic was right when I test drove an I-shift. |
