This has been discussed on here before, and it tured out that that kind of filter is not recommended for our engines for some reason, something to do with sensors and oil from the filter. I can't remember.

I am sure somebody will be along shortly with a link to the thread!

Basically:

If all you are doing is adding a new filter, then the added gains you will get from it will be marginal, if any.

On the down side is the possibility that the oil on the filter element will clog up the MAF sensor, which is not a good thing

In my view, not worth taking the risk vs the benefit.

All that said, if you're playing with the engine to produce at bit more 'go' (eg chipping / tuning or whatever) then the standard filter may be restricting things - in which case the risk might become worth taking

According to a German site I've found there is a K & N filter for the Civic 1.8 (referred to as FK2). Plus a few other goodies including carbon-fibre look wing mirrors and a replacement 1.4 engine cover!!

K & N themselves have an FAQ on the subject of MAF sensor failure.

All told, they reckon you get a max of a 4 bhp increase, but even that varies according to driving style etc.

AEM make Cold Air Intake/Short Ram intakes for the 1,8.
Their new filters do not use oil an should not cause the MAF to failure...

Well I did a lot of reading about it last week. Just can't seem to find the right post about i now.

But there is a lot of talk about CAI and SRI for the R18A1 motor on:
www.vtec.net
www.8thcivic.com
So far Fujita, AEM and Injen make them - but can't tell you the difference.
But I have heard some people having problmes with the Motor Lamp turning on after mounting a new intake...

Hope it helps...

I plan on buying such a filter and test it on my own Civic 1.8. I have a dynometer and I can make precise measurements of the power and torque. When I have done that I will post the result here. I will also do a test of 95 vs. 97 octane. At the moment my car has a bit of a problem showing 140hp. Best result is 137hp.

Sounds like an excellent idea - let me know when you have some news!
BTW - which intake will you use? Can't seem to find a retailer in Denmark... only US

many people are reporting state-side that the AEM intakes are throwing Check Engine Lights. For this reason it appears AEM has fallen out of favor with the 8th generation civic crowds. I'm a member at 8thcivic.

there are a lot of intake mods around already. K&N drop in filters are used by Spoon in most cases because the intake assembly from Honda is an excellent one already. I bought the Fujita short ram because I was looking for a bit of 'aural' pleasure in addition to the 2 whopping BHP

I'm also very interested in knowing if you have any performance increase by changing air intake. Which one do you plan on getting ?

By the way, Hi Thomas Landberg - I know you from www.hi-speed.dk (from my Peugeot days)
I thought you were all into the Seat TDi's these days ?

I think your first name is Kenneth and then I also know you. Strange to communicate with another dane in english...
I might buy an Altea FR van but I am a little tired of Seat's at the moment. My Toledo was a true disaster and my worst nightmare. Thanks good it is now gone. Love the Honda but I might change it with a CDTi sooner or later. 13k on the clock after 2 month sounds like a reason to go the diesel way again...

Spoke with K&N in May and they didnt do a filter for the diesel back then. Still nothing on their site so I have sent an email to their sales dept - will report back. Depending on the reply I get I will ask some pertinent questions!

With regards to the K&N Filter,

I would be very surprised if they produced a product that actually caused damage to our cars!

For one, they are a very reputable air filter company that has been producing products with great success for years! I've not heard of anyone having problems with K&N filters in the past and I'd be very surprised if anyone does have a serious problem with them in the future!

If that's WHP, it is awesome!
.. all depends what kind of dyno you use.
Btw, what do VTI's (6th gen, 160hp) cars read on that dyno usually?

Recently received this reply from K&N to my Question about a filter for my Diesel. They list the 1.3 & 1.8 petrol for 2006 on the UK site - but not sure if it is the correct fitment for the Euro 5 Dr. If not I expect the following applies to petrol as well:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++

Hello

Sorry for the late reply

We are currently assessing the sales figures on this panel filter but a decision should be made by next month

Subject: RE: Filter for Honda Civic Diesel 2006

Hello,
Just checked your site for a filter for my 2.2 litre Diesel Civic – 2006MY and I am unable to find a suitable application.

Any news/target date for a filter for this vehicle?

Thanks
