Replace Standard K&N Filter

Hi everyone,

Does somebody has some experience with the replacement of the standard airfilter with a K&N filter or something?

Does it change the sound or performance?

No, it will not change performance, and no, it won't change sound.
Actually, I lie.
It all does change, but for such small amount that it is not possible to hear or feel any difference at all.

It is, if you want to save money on buying filters for every service, I found mine were being changed by BMW every time the thing went in, until I changed mine to K&N, then it was fine, saved em' keep charging me.

Yes but beware, I've lost one K&N at service in Poland - they threw it away because it was "oily" (it's a wet filter so it must be oily - they did not even know such filters exist). There was a warning sticker on the box but in English

The sound did not change (I used to have one on a Daewoo Lanos and later on a Citroen Xsara, both petrols LPG converted), the performance improved only marginally, but LPG consumption was about 1 l/100 km less than with the standard filter. It's a good investment as long as you leave it alone (don't clean or re-oil unless you drive in the Sahara ) and unless your service throws it away - see my other post. With time, it comes even cheaper than the standard filter

Ok, it's a leasecar..so for maintenance it doesn't matter.
I hope the sound or/and the performance changed, but thats only marginally.

I don't think it's 60 euros worth then..
(or is it?)

Personally I wouldn't - but there is a growing band on 2.2 owners who would probably disagree with me

On a diesel it's a waste of time, a diesel should be run on a tight-suck of air to get full potential, and petrol needs to run on a surplus of air for best performance. So for a petrol yes it's good, diesel not worth it. I found my MPG improved with the K&N, but not much else (2.2, 24 valve petrol BM'), possibly not enough difference to justify purchasing one, but hey it's your choice.

ATB,
Tom

IIRC, diesels run on a lean mixture. There's nearly always an excess of air. Fitting a filter that might let even more air into the engine is a waste of time, as it won't make the slightest difference, except for over-oiling the MAF. Petrol engines are run at about stoichiometric, but richer when throttle is WO. Regulated by the sensors and the ECU: any improvement is debatable. As for the prime purpose of a filter: to let air pass but stop grot. Well it doesn't really matter on a race engine, I suppose, if the filter is less good at its job for a couple of races, and spatters the MAF with gunk I'd rather keep the grot and the grease out on my more mundane vehicle, thanks all the same.

Yes, i totally agree with this ... Had an Opel Astra 2 L 16 Valves (Petrol) and simply consummed 1L to 2L /100km less than with normal filter, but one the performance ... Nothing at all ! Won't feel the faintest difference what so ever.
But for Diesels, i don't know and many guys will not advise this investment for the diesel cars as diesel air take should be choked to the minimum compared to the petrol cars. I must study this and see why !!?

Ok, thanks for all the information..

I guess it's not that worth to buy a filter for 60-70 euros for a lease car. (it's a petrol engine).

I hoped that the filter improved the sound of the engine a little bit and the performance. I think the only way to improve the sound or performance is to add a open air filter or exhaust.

Unfortunately because its a lease car, thats not allowed..

For the savings (over a high mileage, obviously) and for the possibility to leave the filter without servicing almost indefinitely? I guess there won't be a problem with a modern diesel in getting "too much" air
