Running out of petrol

What would happen then (except that you wouldn't be going anywhere)?

When my dealer went through the various options of my CTR, the gauge indicated I could drive for 0 more km/miles. The car was left running idle for 10-15 minutes and was started twice.

Could there have been any damage?

No, don't think so. Main problems (I think ) with emptying your petrol tank is that impurities in the tank will get more concentrated and eventually may clog the fuel filter. Should not be a problem with a brand new car.

The manual states there could be damage. I thought modern cars would auto shut down before anything would get clogged?

Then how would repair services make money?

There is just slight possibility of damage by running out of petrol, and that is to have less pressure in fuel rail, and run engine lean for some time.
But this is quite unlikely to happen.

As for 'impurities in tank', it's one of most often used misconceptions.
Fuel pickup is already at the bottom of tank, and is protected by larger impurities.
If something were to enter, it can same way happen with full tank.

Assuming it hadn't already been showing 0 miles left already...

then running in idle for 10 mins will be fine

In normal driving conditions, if I fill mine up when showing 0 miles left, I can get only 45 / 46 ltrs of fuel in.
which means there is about 4 or 5 ltrs left in it at that stage - enough for about 30 / 40 miles or more.
Even at 60mph, that would mean a good half hour or so of driving - and it would be using a lot more fuel at 60mph than at idle

The engine running lean, do they also call this 'miss fire'?

so how many miles do we reckon are left when it is saying empty (0 miles left), i know when i got one as a courtesy car it said that there was 0 miles left and i had 4 miles to go get to petrol station and it was fine.

Also can anyone instruct me as to how to hang up the petrol cap when filling because i have to leave it dangling, in my previous civic i could use the knoby thing at the end to hook onto a hooky thing (pardon the technical terms lol )

there's a thread in here somewhere...

but no one has completly put it to the test by running dry (or at least not owned up to it! )

as long as you're in 'normal' traffic (ie not 1st gear stop start stop start stuff) you should be fine for at least 20 miles - probably up to twice that.

Wouldn't recommend finding out the hard way though!

as to the cap - you can hook the threaded bit (white) into the U shaped 'holder' on the inside of the silver fuel flap (lid)

it'll make sense when you see it - honest!

I must go and try this. I tried to hook the rubber thing that makes sure you don't forget your cap somwhere, but no dice

edit: It works like a charm

Too dark and cold and wet to go outside and take a pic so I borrowed this one off another thread.

The U shaped part top left is where you want to hook the circular bit which is one the side which you canīt see because it is stuck down the pipe if you see what I mean.

That "U" shaped thing isn't very good - mine falls out of there all the time.

if i am being honest i think that is why i asked in the first place as i tried this before and it fell off and i assumed that it was because it was not meant to go on there. Things is you try too hard and you become consious of other people staring at you on the forecourt as they have nothing better to do than people watch.
