Stretching my legs

Hello all,

I just took the Civic on a run to get it into the vTec zone. I've noticed that when it does kick in the back end goes a bit light, this makes it a whole lot more fun

I took a few people by suprise because I was getting onto the motorway and they slowed and flashed me on, but by the time I had got onto it, they were a distant spec in my mirrors, they didn't need to slow down.

Big grin on my face now, but I agree the brakes aren't as keen as I like.

Hoo hoo.

In your dreams

My poor old 1.8 had to keep slamming on the brakes cos the CTRs in front wanted to cross speed humps at a snails pace !

How many revs do you need to go into the vtec zone? I have gone up to 6000 in 2nd gear but didn't feel any kick in acceleration.

There is no "kick" with a 1.8

I agree thay there is no "kick" with the vtec, there's no supposed to be, just more power as the revs get higher.

Officially its 5,500rpm but it appears to start around 4000rpm.

There's no VTEC 'kick' in 1.8 engine.
Please check this link to find out why.

Can you tell the difference when the 1.8 goes into VTEC mode ? does it growl like the Type R ?

I can´t say I notice.

Sure it revs nicely and makes a bit more noise at higher revs, but no "kick" or "growl".

Don´t get me wrong - I really like the engine - but it is smooth fuel efficant little thing - not a performace car.

Let me try to explain:
VTEC in our 1.8 engine has two modes.
One mode is for pure economy, and requires special 'circumstances' - which are light throttle and revs in range of 1000-3000 rpm.

Anything outside that range is 'normal' mode (or 2nd mode).

There is no VTEC crossover as with Type-R, or even older D16 engines.
There is no audible or power feel, as there is none.

Only possible small difference you could barely notice is not due to VTEC but due to intake runners with variable length (at higher rpm's it switches to shorter runners for more power) - yet this is not VTEC.
