Complacent
While driving my 2.2 today the oil warning light came on. Luckily I was near a garage so I stopped and checked the oil level and lo and behold it was below the minimum. My last three Hondas have been petrol and didn't require any top ups between services (9000 miles per annum). My Civic was bought new and has done 4600 miles so I'm a bit suprised it's used about a litre of oil. How does that compare with other owners experience?

Oil consumption
This is quite normal with most new engines.
Due to the chemicals now added to modern fuels the piston rings and cylinder bores are made out of much tougher materials to prelong engine life. The only down side to this is that it takes an engine a lot longer to "bed in" thus causing quite high oil consumption for the first 10k miles or so. |

I've used 1.5 litres approx at 3.5k miles. Not concerned at that, what with the low mileage.I'll be giving the car another 3.5k, when its oil consumption(if any) may mean something to me.
