Unless its accepted and in writing - you are stuffed

Yes it does vary from insurer to insurer but as I said it also depends on the handler and how you explain the change.

I had a claim and hadn't disclosed the up sized wheels - when the engineer visited he reported back the change and they asked for an extra £30 - as I was near the end of my policy I stalled and got away without paying. Next insurer was happy as I explained they were alloys the same as OEM, cost less and were the same size as oems. Waiting for paperwork to confirm I'm covered as stated.

Any change is an opportunity for an insurer to find a get out clause on the policy.

Hey,

It may differ between insurance companies, but in the case of Elephant (who I am with) they will only put back stock parts and not modified after market add-on's.

It's been a while since I have been with a dedicated modified insurer and so I cannot comment on their policies.

I'm not with a dedicated modified insurer. I'm with Esure. They will replace my modified parts, allbeit only front and rear splitters.

Cosmetic changes are looked into more so as it makes the car more attractive to thieves.

What gets me though is that even after declaring the mods the insurer will still only repair the car to stock spec after a claim, not take into account the different items you have fitted and paid extra for.

I asked my insurer (DirectLine) about this when I took out the policy, as I thinks my 18"s dont look quite right, the insurer said that because the originally came with alloys they did not care what alloys I changed them to as long as the wheel and tyre combination remaind road legal.

Hey,

I'm going to check my policy schedule today, but this is good to know. I seriously dont think mine will do this as I remember thinking why do I have to pay more if the parts I am insuring will not be replaced.

Hey,

Ah this is good to hear then & a surprise when it comes to insurance.

In the past every change I have made which alters a car from factory spec negates an increase in premium, I changed the headlights on my previous car to the twin light units and had to pay I think it was an extra £7.50.

I must just be with the wrong insurers but they are one of the cheapest around thats for sure.
