Premium grade diesel?

I normally use standard grade diesel, and had occasion to fill up with the more expensive 'premium' grade recently. I cannot say I have noticed any difference, though I have not really been 'looking' for differences.

Has anyone else tried this, and what were the results?

What are the proposed advantages of the 'premium' variety?

Cleaner?
Better economy?
Smoother?
Better performance?

I use BP ultimate Diesel 'fairly' often, normally when I notice the price difference to Normal Diesel is not so high.

Anyway, in my Golf 2.0 Gt Tdi, the engine is definitely smoother, quieter, has quicker response. But, the main difference is that the mpg improves anywhere between 3 - 6 mpg. I notice that it is when the engine is cold, or when driving in towns that the ultimate seems to give better mpg.

Works for me, and with the mpg figures being better then there is little or no difference in the cost.

Hi third Honda and Karlak

I use Millers Diesel Clean plus in conjuction with texaco fuel. The Millers additive provides lubrication for the fuel pump and raises the cetane value which means you get better performance roughly 5Bhp and better fuel economy. It really works.

I put in BP Ultimate recently. The car was noticeably smoother, and very possibly more powerful (but only a touch, and it could have been an illusion caused by the smoothness). But for one reason or another, mpg went down by 5 or 6, though this could have been due to me enjoying the fuel...

I saw a Diesel additive in Halfrauds the other day, I think it was Wynnes though, are they okay to use, they don't cause any problems in the long term? Thoughts would be appreciated. Also if they slightly raise the fuel economy do they pay for themselves, I don't recall the price.

Hi richierich

I used quite a few additives from halfords in my time. I found that Slick 50 fuel treatment is very good and Redex. But the ultimate is Millers Diesel Clean Plus. Its a good alround addtive.

I used to notice the difference, when using BP Ultimate in my 2.0 TDCI Mondeo, but I'm hard pushed to notice such a difference in the Civic.

Hi richierich

I'm afraid that the it's not that wildly available. The best I can do for you is give you there telephone no. 01484 713201. Address: Millers Oils Ltd, Brighouse, West Yorkshire. HD6 3DP. By the way there oils are brilliant. Diesel Specfic so copes with soot and sulphur and is available in semi-synthetic or fully synthetc. Different viscosities are also available ie 0-30w, 0-40w 0-50w etc. I haven't found another company so far that does a diesel specific oil that's as good.

Hi IWANTACIVIC

Well it costs about £8.00 a bottle and you put a measured amount in every time you fill the tank or 1/2 the tank. It's probably good for 5-6 mpg better. But what you really notice is that the engine is quieter and performance especially in the mid range is better. And like you your astra 3000 makes the oil last longer.

After seemingly spending the last 5+ years looking for Optimax/98 Octane to run the Subarus on, I was more than happy to have little in the way of options when it came to Diesel. BP Ultimate doesn't really work with Scoobs, just like I'm told Evos don't like Optimax. After a couple of tankfuls of Ultimate Diesel, I'm not sure Hondas like the BP stuff anymore than Subarus. My average is 44.5 (up from 43 on Supermarket fuel) and dropping. I reckon it'll be close to 43 again by the time I've used this tank. It possibly makes the engine run smoother, but only possibly... Certainly there's no extra performance - not like the extra 20% power Optimax gave with the Scoobs.

Looks like it's back to the Supermarkets for us - maybe with a shot of Millers.

Is it Diesel Clean Plus or Diesel Power Plus, I have googled for it and there seem to be a couple of Millers products. Which one is it?

This is the Diesel power stuff, can be bought direct or a little cheaper on Ebay etc.

I know that it has a very good response from the guys in the Volkswagen/seat/audi forums.

Hi Karlak
If you go to www.millersoils.co.uk there is a Shop finding service on the site. Just put your postcode in. By the way Millers Power Plus is the new name for Diesel Clean Plus and they also do a 0w-30 Honda conforming oil.

Decided to go with BP Ultimate rather than a fuel additive, can't buy the additive with my company fuel card, can buy the Ultimate though. Averaging 8.5-8.9p/mile on Shell, lets see what BP Ultimate works out at.

Tried them all in France and found that the fuel economy was best using the Shell V-Power Diesel but they were all much better than the rubbish we get here and the price was comparable.
