Faults Hesitation - Un Smooth Engine (1.8)

My 1.8 doesn't seem so smooth.

It appears to have slight hesitations up the rev range and of late I've had to change down on motorways to get back up to 70+

Also, I appear to be down on fuel economy.

It's just not smooth.

Like when I have the cruise set at 80 - it's like it accelerating, decelerating quickly all the time.

Anyone had similar issues - any suggestions as to what it could be or should I just book it in?

1st thing I would have a quick squnit at is the air filter

after that I'd be off to the dlr!

from which year is it?
this could be down to old vtec software, my engine also felt unsmooth but after the update it has improved a lot.

Do you use supermarket fuel at all? My sister had a similar issue with her Polo and the garage said I be you use supermarket fuel (which she did) they advised she should stick a tank of V-Power in it every so often in order to clean the engine as it probably had crap collecting somewhere. She did as they said and it stopped the problem and now she only uses fuel from Shell (not V-Power)
