that's the way i was taught but there are many different schools of thought
Indeed. I have done that one myself but the issue with a CTR is the oil viscosity is soooo thin that you can hardly see it on the dip stick when cold never mind when warm!

I would rather do it when cold then I know that i'm doing as instructed by Honda and then if there is an issue with the engine I can be sure that i've followed what they've said. How you would prove that to Honda UK is another matter. Probably by starting off by advising that you have read pages 369 of the handbook, always check when cold etc, etc.

Infact this has just reminded me that I want to check my Oil levels before I take the car out again

Think you have put this on your own head....
You talk about the problems while driving the car, so you probably went to the dealer to talk to them about it. And you also mentioned the overfilling problem and now they have something to blame on you, even if the problem is there because of you or not ( go for that expert opninion???, if he can prove the problem is not oil related then maybe...)
But as angie has said (with fire ) there is not much left you can do, and by saying its a new car, i presume you have done quite some miles already...
I hope the engine damage is not to severe and the cost will be as low as possible.

grtz and best of luck

agreed it is difficult to see
Honda could have made a better design like many other things but minor annoyances we can live with

I don't really think another desgin would have helped this. Its like when you look at the oil in the bottle using the little line up the side, you can see it when there is a lot, but when its lower down and you tip it up and let it run back down its almost invisable. Thats the problem with good oil
