1.8 ES Engine Tone
Hi,
I am the new owner of a 1.8 ES, the car has done only 4700 miles and was first registered in Jan 07. Coming from an E46 318se BMW ,where the engine noise inside the car was near silent, I have a couple of questions. How much engine noise should there be inside the Civic ? I don't mean when accelerating hard but just when pottering around at 2k - 3k revs. I need you opinions because mine seems quite noisy at times, with a buzzing / vibration sound. Also when the car is idling can you feel the engine vibrating slightly through the seats. I think the car was stood on the dealers forecourt for a month or 2 before I bought it, so it might just improve with regular use. Sorry for the daft questions but I thought I'd ask the people who really know before going back to the dealers. Daz |

From your description, I would say that there is nothing wrong, that's the way they are. The soundproofing is quite skimpy, making the Civic probably the noisiest in it's class. You won't notice it so much after a while, as long as you stay away from BMWs.

Thanks for the quick reply pcr, I am quite fussy with cars and noises always seem louder when you listen for them. I am very pleased with the Civic so far, It is different from the E46, but not in a bad way, it's more modern and lighter.
Anyway back to the dealers on Saturday to get the spare wheel fitted. Daz |

The engine is a bit louder than some other cars, but it is also nicer sounding, and never sounds harsh when pushed.
It idle, you do get some vibration through the car, but not too much. Mine is now 2 years old and seems sligtly more pronounced now, but only when I concentrate on it. It was wuite a big jump from my 1.6 Sport (Civic) I had before, which at idle, there was no sound and no vibration at all. |

Hi
I get the buzzing noise as well between 2000 and 2500 revs, asked my dealer and they said its normal! Doesn't bother me too much though. I don't find it too noisy an engine at all, in fact when you give it some stick the engine sounds great. |

I get very noticable vibration through the seats when at idle. This only happens once the car has warmed up and climate control is on.
I asked my dealer about it and was told it was normal and just the air con compressor switching on. Just because it is normal does not mean I like it though. No previous cars have had such vibration when at a standstill. |

TBH, I went from a BMW (E39 5 series) to the civic, and noticed a big change in noise, you could wisper at 90 in the 5 and here it you have to shout at 90 in the civ
Although you'll find the Civic a lot more fun, the E46 IMHO (only driven the Coupe/convertable) is a bit stodgy on the overall feel, and I much prefered the E36 to it Tom |

Thanks for all your replies, certainly puts my mind at rest
I notice the engine more on my way home from work, which is 80% stop start traffic. Thanks Daz |

You will notice the extra revving in traffic, however you'll soon adapt your driving style (I went from ordinary stop starts, which gave me fine mpg in my BMW, to to gentle rolling stop starts which give me better mpg in my Civ').

A mere example my friend, but maybe it's the S, it is far louder at 70 than my old car, but I didn't buy the S to be quiet in

I agree, the civic is not the quietest on the road, but it certainly is not the loudest. besides, who minds the engine noise of the Civic? It's a pleasant sound!
