Yeah, you've got little chance of extra gain with these boxes, and the majority eventually wreck your engines sensors.

The boxes on the whole just fool the air sensors into think the air is colder nad therefore denser, which changes the air fuel mixture, ergo it eventually burns your engines sensors out.

Recurring issue, if my memory serves me well the forum concluded on max 3 or 4 bhp increase by tuning. If you can make your car fifty pounds lighter (throwing out your dog) you will get similar effect.

From what I can see all it does is alter the output from the MAF to make the ECU think it is coder that it really is so it will inject more fuel.

16bhp more is pie in the sky, you will however get the placebo effect !

Doddledog, agreed, and I guess you agree this is never good for the engine to get false readings.

Exactly. Your MAF sensor is a fancy resistor which changes impedence dependent on air flow. All this tuning box is is a fixed resistor (approx £0.03 from Maplin) that is set at a specific impedance that fools your car into believing it is sucking in colder air than it is. To compensate for this your ECU adds extra fuel.

In theory you would be running richer, which in a small window will give you more power but in reality 1 of 2 things will happen:

1) Engine runs too rich resulting in a knackered engine burnt out cat increased fuel consumption.
2) The MAF is just one of many sensors. There are also sensors on the exhaust side which will show as over rich if the MAF reading is making the ECU pump extra fuel in. This will either mean your tuning box will be ignored by the ECU which will correct the mixture or the ECU will error the MAF.

Complete waste of money, that is fact rather than opinion.
