The dealers I know bulk buy in vast quantities the very cheapest oil that is certified to satisfy the manufacturers requirements. Of course they then sell it for the very most that they can - normally the price of the most expensive oil on the market plus a bit.

It may well be that the cheapest oil they could find was 5W40 - still in spec so quite OK, but not exactly what you would have used yourself.

I always supply my own oil when it comes to a service.

PS A common practice is to use and invoice "synthetic 0W30 oil" and then include a litre of Mobil 1 in the car. The customer assumes he has Mobil 1 in the engine, but of course he hasn't. The dealer is doing nothing wrong - the oil will be in spec, and the invoice is accurate.

PPS I asked my dealer what make oil he used. "It's synthetic." What make I asked? "It's synthetic." What brand oil is it? "It's Honda spec". If you want your dealer to supply the oil, ask to see the drums. They will be huge, with a pump on top, and may be branded.

My invoice for the 2nd service just says Castrol Magnatec - is Magnatec fully synthetic or should I worry?

Panic over, I phoned the dealer, and queried the oil and they said SLX was used, but their invoicing system needs an update to allow 2 types of oil on their system so no worries!

And this is the reply I got from Honda about the right oil to use!
There seems to be a lot of different opinions going about or maybe Honda keep changing their opinions.

Dear Mr ******,
Thank you for contacting Honda. In answer to your query, although Castrol Edge 0W30 is typically recommended for our diesel Civics, a 10W40 grade is also an equally fine substitute, as is the Castrol Turbo Diesel 0W30. Both offer much the same smooth result.
If you have any further questions or feedback please complete our feedback form @ www.honda.co.uk or call our Honda UK Contact Centre on 0845 200 8000.
Kind regards
Joe

After reading post I was worried as I had done 1300Mls and hadn't checked oil. I went to Halfords and purchased Edge 0-30 Turbo Deisel @ £42.
When I checked the car it was at the full level!!!!!!! Initially furious then quickly relaxed, must have run it in right following the Wikki page. The oil sits in garage. I'll check it weekly from now.
