Unleaded or Super Unleaded???

okay might be a stupid question but is there any noticable difference or is it better for the civic to have super unleaded instead of the regular. (bearing in mind we are all poor because of the price of pertrol anyway) but i really want to know whether its worth the super unleaded???

I used Shell V-Power in my Type R, since using it I have had an increase in my fuel consumption. I did a trip from Essex to Edinburghand got 478 miles from my tank by sticking to the limits for most of the way and giving it the occasional blast.

The higher the RON rating then the better the fule burns using less. I've used Super Unleaded 99 ron for years now and I have found more miles for my money but it all depends on your driving style. Even now when I horse the thing i'm still getting 360 miles from a tank and I don't stay out of V tec for too long. It does cost me 121.9p for V Power instead of 114.9p for unleaded but comparing that I was getting 320 miles out a tank with unleaded and 360 miles when using V Power with no change to my driving then its worth it for me

The more you use higher octane fuel the better the car becomes.

I always use super as well.

I know it's a bit more expensive but as Angie said, I'm convinced the car runs better and gives more mpg. Maybe it helps the i-Shift change as well as it seems to rev well.

An increase in fuel consumed?

I try to use BP Ultimate Unleaded where possible.

BP Ultimate UK - BP Ultimate Unleaded

They also do an Ultimate Diesel.

You don't need to 98 RON in an engine that doesn't require it, the Focus ST, Corolla Compressor as well as the CTR require the higher octane but don't think the 1.8 Civic require this higher octane. For other cars you will not see any performance enhancement over normal shell 95 RON as they both include the cleaning agents.

However, I tried it about 10 tines in my old petrol car (1.8 VVTLI T-Sport Corolla) and it was no more efficient then normal shell 95 RON but the 'lift' was more exhilarating (more boost)

The more you use the shell petrol the better your engine will run as shell petrol has cleaning additives (less carbon build-up), so after 2 or 3 tank full's the fuel will be burning more efficiently and getting more MPG over other petrol types..

All shell petrol has these cleaning additives so these are better for the engine than Tesco stuff. You will always get more mpg out of shell (BP) then Tesco/Sainsbury's/Morrison's/asda fuel.

Which did a test on high octane fuels and found no significant increase in power gains on any of the fuels except one, Sainsbury’s. Of all the fuels a supermarket one was the best for power increases !!!! how mad is that. As for economy, they found that there were gains in MPG, but the extra cost made it less economical.

I have used BP Ultimate and sometimes Tesco Super unleaded (both 97 ron) for the last 3 months.

So far there has been absolutely no improvement in fuel economy from when i was using standard 95 ron petrol.

However i am convinced my car feels 'livelier' to drive and pulls harder (even under 5000 revs) than when using standard petrol.

This could of course be due to the placebo effect because i really want this to be the case

Not found anywhere that sells 98 or 99 ron. Is this available?

When I first got mine I did a month on BP 95RON followed by a month on BP Ultimate 97RON.

Each month involved about 1000 miles so a fair test and a complete tank change of fuel.

My journeys throughout were almost identical so that was also a fair test.

The results :

I agree with the Which? report - no difference. I then went back to the cheaper Tesco 95RON and still no MPG change.

With the cost these days I'll stick to the cheaper Tesco's stuff.

I definately notice a better drive and pull away with the super unleaded, and im happy to pay the money if it drives the way it does...
I use shell, Ive always prefered it anyway!
But i agree if i never felt a difference i wouldnt bother...

Actually, the octane rating is how well the fuel can withstand being compressed without igniting.
Higher octane fuels allow enigines to compress the fuel and air mixture higher, without it igniting on the wrong moment (ie. before the spark plug sparks)

So an engine with a high compression, will run better with higher octane fuels, but in an engine with low compression it makes absolutely no difference.

(Higher priced fuels may be purer and/or have different additives that may influence performance as well, but that is not visible by looking at the octane number)

Hi guys,

I have a 1.8 2006 ES with currently a full tank of Shell V Power. I noticed in town traffic the car takes off much smoother from a stand still or low gear compared with normal unleaded Shell.

I also do a lot of motorway miles between North London/Hertfordhire to/from Nottingham and notice the MPG goes up from average of 39-40MPG on normal unleaded Shell to 44-46MPG on Shell V-Power.

All of the above does depend on driving style and tyre pressure etc.
