Vtec Sound,Power
Hi all,
Just put 700 miles on the clock so went off to try the Vtec out for the first time. Is there supposed to be a noise when it kicks in or a noticable power increase, because i never really noticed anything. Had it up to about 6-6500 and the rev lights were on and nicely warmed up. It's a 1.8 type s by the way. What's everyone else's experience with it ??? PS. my ** has Type "R" Accord and always uses his Vtec.He was surprised also.Is there a major difference between a 1.8 and a 2.0 Vtec, sound etc? Last edited by hak; 15th June 2008 at 15:02. |

The VTEC in the 1,8 is engineered towards fuel economy not power.
There is not supposed to be a "VTEC" power kick or anything like that in the 1,8. |

Maybe it is just in my mind, but I think that you can sense that there is a shift in power when you reach 3500 RPM. However, this may just be because of how the torque curve looks like.

There is a boost in power that you can feel, but nothing like the R..... however when driven well the 1.8 is anything but slow..... unlike those clunky diesels

I use 3rd as default overtaking gear. The car approaches full torque just over 50mph / 80kmh, and keep it to over 80mph / 130kmh. Which is more than sufficient for any legal norwegian conditions...

If you normalise the torque curves of the 1.8 and 2.2 (correct them for different max rev) and compare them, you will see that the 1.8 compete with the 2.2 only in the top part of the rev range - so the 1.8 will lose to the simply stronger 2.2 engine.
But then again - no turbo lag and plenty to gears to choose from makes the 1.8 quite fast if you bother to shift down three og four gears |

No its 5200 RPM and thats also quoted by Honda and others on this site. If it was 5600 RPM then there must be a huge gap between 5600 and 6000 RPM as the needle just gets over 5000 rpm then kicks in.
This car also has a lower Vtec point than the EP3 which was about 5600/5800 rpm. 80% of the Vtec in the CTR acutally kicks in at 2000 rpm hence why it seems to want to got like a 'rocket' as my mother says when moving through slow moving traffic but 100% Vtec kicks in at 5200 RPM when the cams change Last edited by angie4m; 16th June 2008 at 19:01. |
