Economy Tips

Just wondering if anyone has any tips that they would like to share that helps them improve the economy of the civic..
With the ever increasing price of fuel, I'd rather stick with my Civic than have to downgrade to a no-fun econobox

Things like, tyre choice, fuel make, chipped or not, driving style etc...

you really just need to follow the basics

1. keep within speed limits
2. avoid hard accelaration & braking
3. check your tyre pressure regularly
4. check your fluid levels regulary
5. don't carry excess weight in the car
etc, etc

anticipate what everyone else (including traffic and traffic lights) is going to do so you can react to situations earlier

Leave it on the driveway, wash, wax, and admire it, then cycle to work! lol

by the way, in Finland petrol is now 1.59 Euro (1.27 pounds) per litre!!! Luckily I changed from the Alfa 156 2.0 to the Civic. Hope it was worth it...

Hmm, thinking about that, why don't we start a Wiki to see everyone's local petrol prices?

The 156's when they're good are very good indeed. My 159 was an extremely dissapointing car to drive.Economy was 31-33 mpg(that was a diesel)I wanted to stay with Alfa, but not to be with that car.Hence the Civic which drives and performs superbly and gives minimum 12 mpg more into the bargain-result

Yeah well, according to the specs (and no, I don't fully trust them as they are lab specs), the Civic should give approx. 2-3 litres better consumption over 100km on average.

Well my tip is to use a good quality petrol. I have just changed from a national polish company to Shell and the difference has been amazing. For the first time I got 500km from a tank of petrol. That was both a long journey and city driving. Completely amazing! I was averaging 11l/100km and with shell I am down to 8.6l/100km - an amazing difference.

I also only rev up to 2500-3000rpm and that is also helping the economy too!

It seems to be helping me

Hi Everyone!

First post!!

Can I just say thanks for all the info on the site.

Replaced my 03 plate Type S with a 2.2Ex Spaceship a couple of months ago and enjoying it very much. I've found the live and averaged MPG display quite eye-opening.

My tip comes from a change of route this morning. I'd noticed that the MPG was taking a hit every morning when the engine is cold. My usual route to work took me up a slight hill for the first mile before going down again, so this morning I tried another route which is mostly level and then down hill for the first few miles. The result was +0.4 on my average of 45 MPG after the 20 mile journey (total mileage for the average is about 200). Quite a difference.

I think my normal route has changed now!

Cheers
Keith

Best thing I've found is changing gears at low revs. This is my first diesel so not used to changing gears so low down.

1st-2nd: 11MPH
2nd-3rd: 22MPH
3rd-4th: 33MPH
4th-5th: 44MPH
5th-6th: 55MPH

See the pattern!

I've been following this routine from since I last filled up (130 miles ago) and I have so far averaged 50.2 MPG. Normally I average around 43MPG. Most of my journeys are 10 miles to and from work so I think that's quite a good average. Normally I get 450 miles from a tank but I'm well on track for 550.

Also when toodling along stay in highest gear as possible and just feather the accelerator.

Have found premium diesel made no differece at all to my car. Done two full tanks on the stuff, drove the same as I normally would and got no better MPG.

People drive as it suits them, but as fuel is rocketing some people would like to know if there are ways to sip fuel rather than gulp it when it suits ……. On a wooden horse I rock

Considering I bought a new CTR , the fuel economy is great for the type of beast it is. Try running a performance car or SUV

As i have said several times ....Fuel aint comin down .... Period ....get used to the fact ....so you either go smaller.... or play the hand ....you should be more concerned about the VALUE of your PROPERTY.... The way things are ....NOT how to make a car sip fuel ...whats all this sip fuel ....its a car....Not a Miss Daisy mobile ... drive it like one ...ON A STEEL HORSE I RIDE
