Is it possible to change the gearing ratio's???

Hi,

I'm sure someone smarter than me will know the answer, is it possible to change gearing ratio's to give better low end performance at the expense of the top speed???, I would have thought a better 0-60/60-80 is better, than a higher top speed as generally 70-80mph is plenty.

This is very easy to do an a motorcycle as they are chain drive so you can fit a larger rear sprocket (or smaller gearbox sprocket).
However in a car apart from using smaller dia wheels you are into changing the gearbox internals/final drive ratio. Big money. Also by lowering the gearing you also increase fuel consumption.

Right, I was thinking a nippy car around town is handy, but rarely do you need a high top speed, but if fuel economy is adversely affected I can see why it is done.

Thing is,1st gear's low enough as it is really, with the low rev limit of a diesel engine, the car would hardly get moving if it were any lower.

If you want lower ratio's elseware within the gearbox, the alternative is to just drive around in 4th gear as top.
