Both are very good oils and if you get the power gain with the Nanodrive, it's worth the difference (you can't really get much of a power gain for a tenner).

Oil Overfill

Hi

I just bought a 2009 2.2 Diesel froma dealer a couple weeks ago and a check on the oil level reveals somebodys filled well over the upper mark (equivalent to length between lower and upper again). Presume I should get this drained? Should I be worried that this has caused any serious problems?

Thanks

Ross

"equivalent to length between lower and upper again" !?? Are you sure?

If your car have dpf, the extra amount of oil can be caused by fuel diliution...otherwise somebody over filled it. In any case you must drain immediately. If your car has DPF, and the excessive amount is caused by fuel dilution, you should also perform an oil change.
Meanwhile, you must drive your car quietly, to avoid excessive pressure.

You must drain it out.
But...when you bought the car, the level was like this?

Yes, I have only had the car a couple weeks and have not added any oil. I have used about 3/4 of a tank driving so far. I should have checked it earlier.

6 Litres takes a while to warm up too.
So I dont really feel the need for a w40.

That my change when I up the power somewhat.

Idem for me, i not have necessity for a 0w40
But reading many past discussion on this board i noticed that there are many common places about sae grande and 0w30. Few know that on the market there are also 0w30 oils thicker than 0w40 oil, and there are a lot of 5w30 thinner that many 0w30 oils at all temps. Sae grade tell you a little story on a really oil spec, but not all and already the ACEA apec can tell much more about the thickness of an oil. A 5w30 B1/B5 will almost always lighter than any 0W30 B3/**.
Honda reccommends 0w30 for "comodity" and security, with this grade certainly you not wrong and most of the people do not want see and analizes boring technical pdf sheet. So, a 0W30 is "certainly" right, but not "necessarily" the best you can get. Also, the great advantage of a 0w30 came in -20°C climate, where is designer to be really lighter, but this, with italian climate , is pure teory. There is also to say that the basis for formulating a 0W30 are almost always excellent. This is another reason why Honda recommends rightly to use this grade, because whatever you choose, definitely choose well.

Unless there has been poor quality control, a 0w-30 should not be thicker than a 0w-40 at operating temperatures. A B5 0w-30 might be a little thinner than a B3 0w-30, but the difference is minimal.

Cheers

Hi tim, yes, you are right but my example was "intentionally" extreme, but really there are 0w40 lighter than a 0w30. It is the case of Castrol Edge 0w30 A3/B3 LL-01. It have an hths value of 3.6 and VI 167. Mobil 0w40 NL have hths value 3.68 and VI 186...so Mobil 1 will be a little lighter in every situation. And this statement fits perfectly with what my oil pressure gauge shows me.

Amsoil MTF, Redline MTL and Fuchs Sintofluid are ideal.

Hi Danny, just wondering if a/ you got the NanoDrive oil and b/ did you RR it? I'd be very interested in the results if you did On paper it's worth a 2% gain so it should be enough to show on a RR test.
