Not bad considering it's only done 2000 miles
On these figures its another win for the 1.8 when the extra cost of the diesel fuel is taken into consideration and then there is the small matter of the extra cost of the diesel car. So over all a true crushing victory for the humble 1.8 against the fuel of satan.

...except that when you drive 25,000 miles a year, Satan wins hands down.

Not so on those figures the 1.8 would be cheaper to buy run and service

The overall costs should be possible to calculate.
In Norway the 2.2 diesel cost £ 4500 (!) more than the similar 1.8 petrol, and you will find it difficult to close that gap with burning less of the fuel of satan.

The 1.8 has only done 57 miles - what's the average over 200 miles??

After 57 miles my diesel would be at 75 mpg

If Mr Wheelchair can only get 48 mpg average from a tank out of his economical 1.4 there is no way on this earth that a 1.8 can match that - unless you are driving at 40 everywhere in 6th

Not so, given the way he must have driven, I would probably be getting figures in the mid 60's at least. The devil wins.

I recall having read that you can expect the 2.2 to have 10% lower consumption than the 1.8. Then the question is how much cheaper the petrol is to buy and maintain.

Think you read that wrong

Checkout the manual - 1.8 petrol urban - 33.6mpg, 2.2 - 42.6 mpg

On a 400 mile round trip to Birmingham NEC I averaged about 38 MPG in my 1.8 and that was driving the majority on motorway with aircon on all the time and I drive like Lewis Hamilton's older brother!

I don't refer to the official numbers (which state 20% less combined consumption btw), but what people actually achieve in their cars. And there the difference is less.

Right, I just drove from west Surrey into Chelsea averaging about 70mph on the A3 and then having to slow down to 45-50 as I got off the motorway. Until I came to a standstill in traffic I was averaging just over 60mpg in my 2.2 and if I had tried I could have improved that figure by nearly 10mpg again had I driven at 60-65mph on the A3.

Diesel rocks!

So that means that the actual figure that people can achieve shows that diesel is 40% more economical than the petrol

Damn right - Diesel rocks

I don't get bored when I achieve 52-53mpg. I get bored when I achieve 65mpg and above.

During the past 10k km I've been tracking my fuel consumption, it seems I've averaged 6.89l/100km or roughly 41 MPG. Which I think is not bad, considering at least 1/4th of that is motorway cruising at 100 - 120 km/h (roughly, maybe a tad bit over the limit occasionally ). You can clearly see the effect of using A/C on the graph... almost a liter more on 100km

Click the image to open in full size.

The trip computer claims 6,3l/100km consumption for the same period. That's one hell of an error marginal.

Well, I find it hard to believe the A/C-consumption to be 1 l/100km . I would expect maximum 0,3 to 0,4 l/hour and then you need a average speed of 35-40 km/h to get 1 l/100km.
Could the change from winter to summer wheels increase consumption? For me it hardly does (Conti winter and Michelin Primacy summer). What dimensions do you have?

I have logged my trip computer for 30 000 km, and it is almost 9% optimistic! My average consumption so far is 7 l/100 km (or 6,4 l/100 km computer-style ).
