It does, but you need to be doing getting on for 7K rpm. It's a shame, would have liked them to come on a touch earlier, and reserve the full set for the redline.

That actually is the point of them
Those light are basically 'shift lights' - meaning when you need to change gear for max power&not to hit rev limit.
Basically, those lights shouls start lighting up at like 500rpm before rev limit (cant tell exact rpm's... still waiting for my space ship to land ).

....and when you get yours, you'll be thinking... hold on... why do they come on so late in the rev range!

Too distracting for me. Would prefer an audible beep for high-rev gear changes and a rev limiter. I think Imprezzas do this.

Sarahjo - not really very good for the engine to rev it hard when you're stopped but no need to worry (it's a tough engine).

The idea of the lights (as Nick said) is to allow you to accelerate hard, letting the engine rev up to maximum, and just at maximum power you get a very quick 1-2-3 of lights that you should see in your peripheral vision telling you to change gear straight away. They need to come on right at the last minute, so you get the flash effect to get your attention.

It's a bit of a marketing ploy (like the starter button) and is echoing the shift lights seen in racing (and F1) cars. On a cooking hatch most people will not thrash it to within an inch of its rev limiter. It is though a lot more useful on the diesel, which runs out of revs earlier (and there is often a benefit in changing before the red line, due to the high torque peak).

Thanks for that Pottsy...don't worry i just touched the accelerator quickly and they came on.....trouble is i do like to pretend i'm in an F1 car and i have never made them come on when i'm driving I am just happy to know that they are working.....
