Ancient Nerd Further to my post above re A3 B3 phoned Castrol and spoke to Jeff Briggs Tech division at Castrol (Very helpful guy who seemed to know what he was talking about) If I recall the conversation correctly he said that the A3 B3 spec was a performance spec higher than the A1 B1 and his recommendation was definitely the 0w 30 Edge

I'm not too sure that Honda's Castrol recommendation isn't part of a " DEAL " that the two companys have with each other ??

We use Mobil one 0W-30 for the 2.2 diesel and a fully synthetic Mobil synt S 5w-40 for the 1.8. A semi synthetic 10-40 is also available but we would recommend fully.

No doubt the use of Mobil within our company is probably part of a similar type of " Deal ".

I believe the oil business can be quite ruthless

FORGET THE 5w, 10W oils!! It is good, for older engines with more miles, bigger clearances, but it is def. too stiff for a brand new Honda engine with latest technology!!! Trust me I know what I am talking about!!

Go for a full synthetic 0w-30 or 0w-40 that's the right one!!

Yes, you'll get a drip or two left out of 6 litres. There's a turbo to lubricate and cool - so the oil will cost £70+

This is the leaflet I got from the dealer when I picked up my car in March. Leaflet states LongTec which is now called Castrol Edge. So far had to add 1 litre of oil (Castrol Edge) in my 1.8 petrol since March and covered 8,000 miles.

Good to see the leaflet confirming Honda recommend Edge. However I mentioned on my longer note earlier in this thread that Jeff Briggs from Technical Division Castrol advised not to put this oil in for the first 10k miles but to specify this on first service. Not ideal for new engine bedding in. Also should it be necessary to top up in meantime then Edge is oil of choice.

Seems a strange range of oils being used, hopefully they all mix ok
I found the oils to be 0W-20 for the petrol cars and 0W-30 for the diesel.

Oh no, now i'm worried! I 'topped up' (nearly a litre bottle!) yesterday and used some Castrol GTX Magnatec 10w-40. This is the second time i have put this in the car, i've done 9000 miles.
I didn't realise choice of oil was so crucial and just used the handbook for reference. Will my engine be ok?!

Duncan,

You can use either the "OK" 10-40 oil, or the "Good" 0-30. Your choice.

Because Honda do not service the car - the dealer does (and the dealer is an independent company). The oil will be within the specification laid down by the manufacturer, but if you want to specify further, then you must talk to your dealer.

Honda - a car manufacturer that sells to dealers, and has a contract with the dealer.

Car Dealer - a company that sells you a car, and may sell you servicing. You have a contract with the dealer, and not Honda!

no the dealer has a contract with honda, and honda will say what is done on the servicing of its cars (what oil to use)
