Ok who can explain this
I took the car in to the dealers today and while it was there asked them to check the oil - guess what! They had to drain some out as there was too much in there LOL Now yesterday the oil late came on together with the warning indicator for 15 minutes, when I got home I pulled out the dipstick and wiped, put it back in pulled it again and there was no evidence of oil on the stick and the smallest amount went on to the cloth, we checked again an hour later and it was the same. The dealership didn't have a clue why the light came on or why it seemed dry!! I only put 2 litres in and now they have drained some of it |

Topcat, when topping the oil up it can take some time for it to trickle through and the level settle, maybe five minutes. You must have put too much in.

Well because the dipstick apeared dry and the oil light had been on I actually didn't even think 2 litres would have been enough, thankfully thats all I put in |

Hi Topcat
Maybe the dipstick is not entering far enough into the oil sump. But it should if all the dipsticks are the same size! A puzzel. Last edited by Charley Farley; 10th January 2007 at 15:34. |

hmmmm... I have to say that having pulled up within minutes of the light coming on, my engine seemed to have no oil in whatsoever. I plunged the dipstick 3 times but no joy...therefore, I popped into the petrol station and bought a large 5 litre container of oil. I then put 4 of the 5 litres into the engine and still it only just came up to half way up the dipstick. Obviously thinking that would do I carried on with my journey. I haven't checked the level again today, but am a little curious to see how far up the dipstick it is now.
I drive approx 400-500 miles a week and don't exactly drive slow all the time, however, I wouldn't say I thrash the engine either. To use up 4-5 litres of oil in under 5,000 miles does seem a little odd, but then again a friend of mine has an S2000 and regularly top her up with oil. Hardly eco friendly is it. |

Have just checked the oil level again, having let the car cool down from driving to work, and it is three quarters of the way upto the orange ball marker thingy. Which correct me if I am wrong would be an ideal level which would be ok if I hadn't had to put 4 litres in to get it there.
I'll contact Honda for their thoughts. |

Well.. I rang the local Honda dealer in Mansfield Notts and the guy in servicing was very calm on the other end of the phone. When I told him it was the petrol engine and that it'd used up 4 litres of oil in less than 5,000 miles, he didn't sound very shocked. In fact I almost got the impression that he thought I was being silly to even worry about such a petty thing. The conversation went something along the lines of
me "blah blah blah seems odd to use so much oil blah blah" Honda Guy " Yeah that's quite normal while the engine runs in" reaffirming that it would sort itself out. So there you go don't worry anyone, just keep a bucket of oil handy, just in case......think I'll be checking it a little more often from now on, then again that's what warning lights are for isn't it....(can you tell it's a company car lol) |

Drove about 10000 km with mine and just topped it up with half a littre of oil (petrol engine). Years ago I have driven an Opel Astray, which used 9 litres of oil on 10000km.... The opel dealer told it was normal for a new car.... I was glad it was just a temporary car..

I had exactly the same happen at Christmas as it turned 5000 miles, completely dry - a real worry at the time, one litre of oil sorted it though and seems to have remained at a reasonable level since. Like Topcat, other new cars I have a had have barely used a drop one year to the next.
