Transmission "Whirring" From Transmission

For the last few months I've been hearing a "whirring" noise from the transmission somewhere. Never seems to change pitch when the car is in gear. It seems to disappear though when the clutch is engaged.

Had it checked out by a dealer and without doing a huge investigation they heard it and concluded that it was not a big thing.

It's bugging me though as it's quite loud in the cabin (particularly when in slow moving traffic when there's no other noise to drown it out).

Thinking of moving her on in the new year (it's a 2006 1.8 saloon by the way with 80,000 miles) and as a result dont want to spend much money on it.

Anybody any idea what it could be? It's not the AC by the way.

Got it checked out today. It's not the transmission thankfully.

It's the water pump tensioner bearing. The reason the sound appeared to disappear when clutching was that the revs obviously dropped when changing gears and the sound became very low.

Dealer supplying the part and I'll pay labour -140 Euro. Not as bad as I'd feared certainly.

1st time it's happened..........apparently.
