Angry Engine Warning Light & System Check Message (coolant sensor)

For the first time my Civic has decided to grace me with an uber-fault! This morning my Engine warning light came on along with my system check message. Went to Peterborough Honda to get them to plug the old girl in and see what was the problem; They said my coolant sensor was knackered but due to some corrosion issues i would need............A WHOLE NEW ENGINE LOOM!!! Well, they kindly told me the loom would be a whopping £1400 not including labour! My Civic is not even 4 years old and I need to get a new engine loom?! Ruined my day for sure! I am just waiting to hear back from Peterborough Honda as they said that Honda will often cover large issues like this if the car is within a year of the warranty running out but i may have to pay for labour. All-in I would be looking at about £2000 if i had to pay for it all - not a happy shopper today!!

Anyone else had any issues like this and if so what did Honda do about it for you?

I'll try and update this post if/when Honda get back to me!

Go to another dealer for a second opinion, I would say.

Can you get them to show you where the "corrosion issues" are?
Can you then photograph the "corrosion issue"?

£1 says it's a £100 repair to some wires that have been damaged by coolant from a faulty/leaky sensor. Some main dealers are not tuned in to repairs - they just swap out faulty parts. And in this case the part is huge.

I would also take the car somewhere else, for a second or third opinion.

I agree. Maybe take it to a good auto-electrician who can repair the damaged part of the loom rather than replacing the whole thing. That is a big bill!

Just heard back, they said Honda won't pay for a new loom, however, they are sending a specialist part to repair the connection and so a new loom wont be needed (WHEWWWWW!) I dont have to pay for the part they are sending, just the new sensor and labour, gonna cost about 190 sheets - better than 2 grand but still a slight kick in the jacobs

What's the part number? A photo of the damage would still be fascinating.

I wonder whether the damage to the loom was done over time, or when it was at the dealer...

There's a rat-like pong around.

I've never heard such a load of codswallop, no way should that cost more than £100 to repair. Take the car to an auto-electrian, or anywhere but the dealers.

Well theres no way I would have paid all that wanga for a new loom - I was raging! As it turns out, I am not paying for the repair just a new sensor which has gone tits-up and caused the error fault. If they had said i would definately need a new loom i would have gone to Kettering Honda who are awesome but are little further away from me, and i would have got a second opinion from them. I only went to Peterborough as i didnt know how serious the fault was and didnt want to drive too far just in case.
I will try and get photos of the damage if i can and post up for everyone

Photos would be most useful for the forum as this came up previously.

I had the same coolant sensor fault on my car in July and I remember seeing a guy on here say he had one just last month and now you. Seems to be a bit too frequent to be an isolated incident. Mines was changed under warranty.

Yep, unfortunately my girl is a first batch Civic and will be 4 in December so I'm out of the warranty window. Aaah well, at least it is getting sorted by them and i don't have to pay for a new loom eh!

Check System (Engine) Warning Light On

Hi Guys

My wife had the Check System (Engine) Warning Light come on the multi-information display whilst driving. She took it straight to Honda Dealership who reset the warning message. Updated the ECU and said if it happens again the rad temperature sensor will need replacing.

On the way home a different warning light came on - the Oil Pressure Low warning. She stopped turned the car off and checked the oil. All ok. Restarted the car and the oil warning disappeared. A few minutes later the original fault Check System (Engine) Warning Light came back on and has stayed on.

Will be taking back to Honda Dealership asap - has anyone else had this problem and been told it is the rad temperature sensor?

Cheers

Martin

Mine has 'overfuelled' and cut out completely a couple of times due to over revving it.
But a 'reset' as described in the manual soon turns the ECU light off
