Perhaps those who've always driven manual find I-Shift an improvement, which I'm sure it is, and those who've always driven auto find it inferior, which I also can understand.

I agree on the automatic mode comments, but just out of curiosity: what's better in real manual comapred to paddles? If you think what you do in the manual, you use the clutch, ease on gas pedal, change gear, then lift clutch and use the gas pedal to get a smooth change. With iShift (or Selespeed or other similar systems) you should use the paddle and ease a bit on the gas pedal at the same time if you want similar smooth change. If you just want a speedy change, then you'll get a bit of a "bump" but the same happens with real manual.

Our Civic and CR-V's are both automatics but I still enjoyed the test drive and can hardly wait for our new civic to arrive _ yes in auto mode it isn't as good as a full auto but it ain't jerky ( of course people are going to have different opinions - but having driven both manual and automatics I have to say well done Honda ( yes there is room for improvement - but for their first attempt - I have no complaints) |

This is a very interesting thread. My last three cars were all automatics (Cougar, Honda CRV and Mercedes) if you ‘put your foot down’ in the civic there is a definite lag between 1st and 2nd. However if you drive without hammering the throttle it is silky smooth without any lag and equal to the three cars mentioned earlier. However when switched to the Manual mode and you want to ‘put your foot down’ it is by far superior and gives you such a better driving experience altogether I do lift my foot from the accelerator pedal slightly when changing gears and again it is very smooth the problem for me being I often have to use company hired cars which I have driven many makes and models both automatics and manuals, none compare with the Honda’s I-shift for versatility and enjoyment of driving. Also something else happens when I have to change cars, I then realise how good the civic is as a very good all-rounder and I would not swap the car for anything in the price range as well as some more expensive cars. Best advice is try before you buy at least a couple of times and if possible get someone who drives an I-Shift to give you a ride.

with a semi auto box and on that basis it is good ( only the DSG box is better) however I understand what you are saying about the full Automatics |

I know this may have been mentioned on here - but can I just ask if anyone has one of the early ('06) I-Shifts? It's just that I'm thinking of changing my manual for an i-shift and went to see a dealer today - who sort of laughed at me for even asking about a used i-shift? He basically said that the new one's don't have as many problems, but the older ones are horrible to drive??? Is this true? Should I just stick with the manual? Thanks in advance! |

Silky smooth gear change, quiet and smooth in auto and rapid with the paddle shift or stick. Can't see myself having anything else. Love it! |

Thanks for that! I can't imagine why the dealer would want to put me off sooo much - he honestly made it sound like the worse thing I could ever do!

Hi mihael, mine changes gear depending where my foot is on the accellerator. If I push down fast it will hold the gear far longer than if I gently push down.
A gentle push changes quicker through the gears and gets me into top quite soon. A rapid firm push and hold keeps the revs there to the point where, if I was using manual, I would be just about to change. I use the paddles to change down to be ready for overtaking (or on a long hill climb or slowing through the gears to be ready to go back on the power). The beauty of the system is that you can switch from auto to manual and back again whilst on the move at any speed. Great fun; I |

I wasn't too impressed with the i-Shift on it's test drive, but thought that I wanted the lazy way of driving so I still went with it when I put in the order.
It now seems a very clever piece of kit, as it seems to have learnt how I like to drive and I get absolutely faultless changes in Auto and I have the option of that extra bit of fun and control in 'Manual' when required. ......and that lack of fuel consumption....must be saving me ££££££'s "Age is a high price to pay for maturity!" I'm am not easily pleased but the i-Shift does satisfy. Don't expect F1 speed of changes, their boxes come out a little more expensive the the Civic's! "With all the advances in medicine they still have not got a cure for the common birthday!" Charles H. |
