Yes sometimes when changing from first to second when cold it can be a bit notchy but nothing too serious though. How bad is yours?

I also had this with my previous car. Could be possible due to the oil which is a bit thick. When the engine warms up (and so does the oil), the oil is getting thinner and can easier flow through the engine and gearbox etc.

i have had it with every car i have ever owned n yeh its to do with the oil, bnothing to worry about its unavoidable tbh just keep an eye if it starts to do it when the gearbox is warm then somethings up with synchromeshes from 2nd upwards.

also 1st wont have a synchromesh so will also be prone to crunch (all cars)

This is something I have complained about all along, first car was replaced because of the bad gear change, the second car is better but still notchy and stiff.

I am not impressed with the gearbox in the civic at all. A friend of mine is having hers looked at as she cant get hers in to second gear without a real struggle.

Mines a diesel but the gear box is silky smooth, was a bit funky at the start but settled down nicely. No complaints here!

My wifes 1.8 se has done 1500 miles. She has trouble getting 1st to 2nd, and going down the box into 2nd. Had a jazz for two years, the gearbox was so sweet!!!

Just over 9500 kms (close to 6000 miles, I guess) and the shift is still notchy/chunky between 1st and 2nd, going up and betwen 3rd and 2nd going down. Still better than in the Peugeot 307 I had - changing gear was like stirring a stick round in a bucket of coal - but nowhere near the shift in the Almera GTI that I had prior to the 307. But the Civic has so many other features goig for it, so I think its a great little car.

My previous car was a Ford Puma and the gearbox was indeed really good. Although i must admit that my Civic's gearbox is also quite good. I find it easier to shift really fast than with the Puma.

The Puma has a close ratio gearbox fitted, but that doesn't mean u actually shift faster. I personally shift faster, or so it feels, beacuse of the way the stick feels when i put it in a gear.

While I can't comment on Duncan's assertion that the Puma's gearbox was far better than the Civic's, I can certainly agree with Russell that the gearchange in the Jazz is superior to that of Swindon's new model. What's more the round gear knob was much nicer to hold too.

Must admit I don't have any problems with 1st to 2nd, but 2nd to 3rd is still notchy. Seemed to loosen up after a few months, but the cold weather seems to have had an adverse affect upon the change.

Thinking about it, for all the extra power the 1.8 has over the 1.4, I'd probably swap for the smaller engine if it came with the Jazz gearbox too (as the 1.4 DSI engine is the one found in the Jazz anyway).
