i Shift change - new software

Talking to four Honda dealers only one was up front about a change in progamming for the i Shift models and none could explain what it was all about. Any news, ideas?

by 'up front' do you mean that they were telling you it was going to happen (but wouldn't say what)?

Or rather, were you less than impressed with the i-Shift and you're worried 1 dealer might have been spinning you a line about how it's 'about to be reprogrammed to make it much better'?

welcome aboard by the way

But no, I've heard nothing about it at all, sorry

Thanks happy to be aboard. Clarifying: some of the dealers would apparently have been happy to sell any cars/demonstrators they had unmodified. Honda are apparently modifying i-Shift models (petrol models confirmed, diesel?) in production and booked by Dealers from some unspecified date, which will result in emissions going up and the VED by one band (100-125) also petrol consumption -presumed to now be same as manual car). What could not be explained is: why and what is the effect. best I got is 'it will make changes smoother'. Since I was pretty happy with un-modified i-Shift went ahead to do a deal on a new car. i-Shift has its own 'style' with pluses and minuses compared with the previous torque converter type but pluses rule.

Sorry I am still confused

Do you mean that owners that already have their cars with i-shift
can expect their dealers to be calling them or a letter from Honda
asking them to book their cars in to get a mod done to the i-shift

Or that all new Civic's with i-shift built from **/**/2007
will have this new superior i-shift??

just a minor point Fredsays - no i-Shift available on Diesels

rest sounds very interesting...

especially if it is retro applied to older Civics - which then go up a VED class and therefore have to pay more road tax...

what i shift change any honda dealer now ?

I find this interesting as when i first started to get interested in the i shift i did quite a lot of asking different dealers and Honda UK if the i shift was to be the civics only auto type box as other car manufacturers had tryed these and had moved away from them and as i did not want to be left with a car come sale time that no one wants and that even Honda had drop ed in all cases the reply to my questions was that Honda had no plans to produce any other auto for the civic as they where totally committed to this system for economy and omissions and in fact intended to produce there other cars with this box ? and when i asked if any further mapping improvements for the box where coming i was informed that no the techs had got it as good as it gets for power ,emissions ,and economy so if this is to change i hope it can be retrospective to our older models otherwise i would feel that Honda was once again finding they had made a design error put it right but had no concern for the other i shift customers and would leave them high and dry as when you came to sell, it would be a case of don't buy the i shift model before a certain date so lets hope we are not forgotten

IMHO there is nothing wrong with the i-Shift! As I said it would be nice to have a sports button the make the change quicker (Maybe not a smooth) but I love it

Brodick I have no idea about a retro mod but I suppose it is no big deal if its remapping. The Dealer who was straight on the matter did as I recall say that new cars in the hands of Dealers would be modified. I suppose Honda have to be ready to tell 'the authorities' after what date/no. all cars were to new spec if any safety issue ever came up.

How interesting... So you could register the car, and then get the mod to avoid the VED jump, or could you? What a bore that the improvement costs a band hike.

Exclamation i shift...upgrade?

hi .....new member here ....waiting for my new civic with i shift expected on 1st march ...
here is the story im being told
the dealer told me that the delivery date has been delayed by around three weeks to the 18th because of an upgrade to the i shift software but get this .......if your car has been registered allready the upgrade would not be done .....as it changes the tax band /emissions rate of the car
if you have an i shift on on order ask about this upgrade
will this affect the resale value of the car
imagine the question ............did it have the i shift upgrade ...? no
oh well its worth a little less then
any way be warned ......

civinfo....... rules ..

This is interesting someone else already mentioned something about an upgrade for the I-shift - ( I have the feeling that our car may have already been built though will need to get onto the dealer to see what the situation is!

I would find it very unlikely that this would have any effect on the cars retained value - car makers can and do make minor changes to their cars at any time without prior notice, these changes really don't make any effect on an older cars value only when a car has a big facelift there may be a difference ( even then we sold an 04 civic 1 year after the all new model was launched and still got a better trade in than expected.

Anyone knows what exactly does change with new software?
Does it affect gear change speed, does it have any effect in manual mode, or all it does is change way it work in automatic mode - and if so, how?

I'm a tad confused by this -

According to my latest brochure circa Nov 2006 the 1.8 i-shift is in the lower end of band D 153g/km (VED Band D Petrol) (same as the manual model).

According to the honestjohn website it is in band C -143g/km (VED Band C Petrol) (no doubt an old review).

Therefore the change to the software must have taken place some time ago ?

The Dealer told me old rate of tax was 100 (infers band C) but would be going up to 125 (band D). He said all cars with Dealers were being taken by Honda to make the change - not done on Dealers premises. The Nov brochure might have been anticipating the change. The i-shift I drove at the Dealers a few days ago was emphasised as not altered. Hope this helps.

With all the gearbox problems I had i asked the dealer that finally managed to repair it & reply was they asked honda who denied all knowledge, probably some cunning ploy to fob me off.

Fredsays can you tell us the name of the dealer who advised you of this
change?

I need to chase my dealer today as they have not come back to me
with an answer on this and it would be good to be able to mention another
dealers name

Thanks
