for my daily ride to work I use whatever I can get for the lowest price. In the weekend it's another story |

Just got back from a 230mile trip to Cambridge, A1, M11 etc plus small A & B roads stuck to speed limits, kept in high gears 54mpg inc 45mins stuck in traffic. Tesco diesel from day one.. perhaps if I used Shell I would get more but would have to travel umpteen miles to find a station so what's the saving..

On Tesco diesel I just did 400 mile round trip mainly A40/M40/M25/M11, motorways at 85 on cruise, A40 mostly at 60 on cruise & upped to 48mpg from my previous run on the same route of 44mpg. now standing at just short of 4k overall.
Did try Shell super expensive & Shell standard but found no noticeable difference in performance or economy since returning to Tesco. |

Let me know what you think after a few tanks of Tescos 'finest'. I usually fill with it, but have been so impressed with the BP, really is a noticeable difference, I think I'll stick with it for a while. Have yet to try the Shell.

My last fill up was my first and last from Tesco. I have had the car a year and it was the worst MPG I have had in that time. It was mainly local running with 80 miles motorway and I got 404 miles from the tank ..... that is about 10% down on my usual with Shell

I'm just filling up wherever I am when I need fuel wether it be Supermarket fuel or otherwise. I get 41ish as an average driving over 1000 miles a week in the Type S GT 2.2. Thing is, I drive it how my mood takes me at the time, sometimes its a gentle cruise, sometimes perhaps a little more spirited!! I bought it to have fun in, not to worry about my fuel return!

Ok, I'm not a Civic owner (yet!), but my 306 always seems to go better on Sainsbury's City Diesel. Just a feeling, just seems to have that extra spring in it's wheels and feels smoother.

Only filled mine up twice in the first 1200 miles or so but ran well on initial tank (think it was Shell as that's the nearest to the dealer), not much difference on tank from Waitrose but a lot noisier on latest tank from Esso. Economy getting materially better as miles go on, looks like over 50 on current tank full.

I used to be an RX-8 owner and their forum has some interesting discussions on fuel. There's a few guys on there that have some technical expertise on the subject. Perhaps you can't make a direct comparison between diesel and petrol but they generally found that supermarket fuel was no worse than Esso/BP/Shell etc. Apparantly the turnover of the station is more important than the additives as the both fuel and additives deteriorate over time. Thus a supermarket with high turnover is likely to have better quality of fuel than a lower turnover big brand outlet. But it's your money so put in chip fat if you prefer for all I care!

A gentleman from East Ayrshire, eh? That's tractor country.....
How's the 2.2 running on the red diesel? My 2.2 is on its 3rd tank from new :- 1st was Jet (put in by the dealer) 2nd was BP Ultimate (as recommended hereabouts) 3rd is Esso cooking diesel (nearest station to where I was) I can't, honestly, say that I've noticed the slightest difference in performance or smoothness in any of them. The 3rd tankful isn't finished yet so I can't quote MPG for the Esso, but Jet & BP Ultimate both gave 45-46 MPG with about 80% city driving. My jury is definitely still out. |

I believe Ninooke is right - in that Diesel from different suppliers all comes from essentially the same source and it is then modified. For instance, Shell Diesel Extra contains additional additives (aka a detergent) that helps clean the engine which in turn helps ensure the engine is running as it was when it left the factory i.e. as efficiently as possible. which therefore means the performance and fuel eccomony is retained. It's not a different grade of Diesel, it just has other stuff in it that Tescos fuel doesnt (which is why Tesco fuel is more competitively priced (it doesnt have the overhead costs of additives etc)
If anyone switches to this fuel, I think it will probably take several tanks before you see the benefit of the switch... If you use this fuel from new, once the engine is run in I reckong you will probably get some pretty good fuel ecomony figures. Unfort, my only local petrol station is a tescos On petrol engines you can put some stuff in the engine that De-Cokes(SP?) it; does anyone know of similar things that can be done with a Diesel engine?? Thats what I think anyway |

Have you tried Millers Sport 4 Diesel additive. Really good stuff. I used it on my last car(Skoda Fabia vRS 130 Tdi) and it made a difference. Less noise, better response and less smoke.

I've used the BP Ulitmate for quite a while, and, once I felt that the percevied benefits wore off, I tried a couple of tankfulls of Tesco's finest. NEVER again, the car started to pink under acceleration and was generally a lot rougher sounding. The benefits were not obviously only perceived!. I then tried a couple of ordinary BP Diesel, and whilst significantly better than Tesco's, neither of them come close to the performance of the BP Ultimate, in terms of smoothness, power and fuel ecomony. It is a false ecomony NOT to use BP Ultimate, in my own opinion of course.
