Question 2.2 Coolant Temperature

Hey guys.

The coolant temperature in all cars I've been in has always gone and sat exactly in the middle of the gauge on the dashboard after a bit of driving around.

My 2.2 is not the same though, it likes to stay a few clicks short of the middle. Its always been like that (I got it in August).

Click the image to open in full size.

Questions are:
  1. Does your 2.2 temperature stay smack bang in the middle (like it should?) - It would be nice to know if this is a common thing or whether my car actually needs tweaking.
  2. I would have thought that the operating temperature of the engine would have an effect on economy, performance and maybe other things too. Is it really something I should be worried about? A few clicks in engine temperature will probably make a difference over a few thousand miles, right?
  3. Any way of tweaking this? Assuming the gauge on the dash is okay (self-test works fine), and the temperature probe is okay... is there a thermostat somewhere? I guess it must be all software. Call the dealer?

It's odd though, I really wonder why they did this.
