Just watched the video again of Jeremy Clarkson drive an Audi A8 v8 diesel from London to Edinburgh and back on one tank of fuel. Amazing how he made it despite every thing on the car telling him he ran out of fuel 35 miles ago!! Makes me wonder just how accurate or truthful the MPG display or fuel gauge is on our cars. Don’t fancy finding out the hard way though.

2.2 i-CTDI Sport.
Still quite new, 1500 miles on clock. Average journeys, mix of urban and dual carriageway. So far, computer readout stays around 41-43 mpg. My fill up strategy is same as TTDegs, i.e. I fill the tank with about 10 gals of fuel at a time and the tankload usually lasts about 420 miles, which would concur with the computer. Just as a side issue, I usually fill up with Shell and have been getting 42+ but last time I filled up at Total and this tankful hasn't shown over 42 yet, however I don't think there's anything in this, probably just coincidence. |

Managed 60.8mpg on the way home tonight with a full tank. Traffic was very kind mostly 40 to 50 mph and very few stops. I was accelerating by breathing on the accelerator mind, and I could not of tryed any harder to be economical. Normally being very careful I get 55mpg on the same journey. No way could I go back to the RX8 and cope with 22 to 24mpg and 2 petrol stops a week!

First of all : 1.8 Sport Petrol 17" alloys
Filled up with V-Power last night, I was a wee bit nippy on my way home, switched the engine off at 33.5 MPG. So this morning (10 degrees outside, mild), I switched the car on and sit for 2 minutes waiting for my wife. In that time with A/C off and the temperature at 21c I managed to drop my MPG from 33.5 down to 32.6 (The car only had about 10 miles tops since I reset last night) Does everyone get this kind of drop sitting doing nothing in their civic ? I've never had good MPG from it even when my cautious and clever driving wife was at the helm most of the time, best I've ever had was 36 mpg after a 3 hour drive to the Lake District. |

Half way down a tank of mostly urban driving now, the MPG is 35 (8.1 l/100 km).
I never run the engine for two minutes when the car is stationary But if the computer has been recently reset, I can see a clear drop in MPG when starting after standing at a red light. |

2000 miles mpg
Just filled up after 2000 miles on odometer; trip a showed 41.9; brim to brim calculated at 41.7, so very accurate. Trip B is recording 42.1 for the whole 2000 miles; drove it very carefully after fill up for 17 miles home and got it up to 46.2 mpg. This is what I really want all the time. Still £40 of diesel every 8/9 days is not bad; I like the fact that the tank is so small and you're never left paying £65 plus (well not yet anyway)

(wish I did... what sort of speed were you doing on the run (without admitting anything 75 (indicated) uses a lot more fuel than 60 (indicated)... |

With regards to the question about fuel consuption at idle, if one assumes that you are stationary then your fuel consuption figure is 0 (zero) mpg.
Zero miles travelled for a gallon of fuel. However, if you're coasting down a big hill with your foot on the clutch and the engine idling then your fuel consumption will be very good indeed. Don't make the same mistake I once did (in my younger days) and turn off your engine while cruising down a hill, you don't realise how much the brakes are assisted by the servo. Never made that mistake again! In worst case you can even apply the steering lock. |

Now something else, has anyone of you ever noticed a strange behaviour regarding the miles left in your fuel tank. Mine is totally off, when i use the mpg the car is giving me, i can never attain the milage the computer is returning. But when flooring one gear (mostly first) i get dramatic fall backs (going down 60 miles or more) Last edited by Woette : 6th December 2007 at 08:50. |

Hi all,
Take a look at this site for fuel consumption statistics: Overview: Honda - Civic You may join and add your own data, I highly recommend it. Greetings from GVA, Nils |

Driving below 2000 rpm and after a cold start and outside temp. -8 i have got readings of 52 mpg after 10 miles trip. But i bought diesel because of it's torque 340 Nm and you can not compare it with petrol. Better consumption, speed, smoother engine, acceleration.... And comparing with my old 1,5 ils Civic this is uffffa much better and i am happy even with 43mpg wich is btw much less then before and i can do even better. |

Every car has a sweet spot. My old 2.0 Accord auto had a cruise speed sweet spot at about 80mph. Any faster seemed to be a strain, any slower was difficult to keep to. My 2.2 Civic manual seems to get to 96 in a nanosecond before it starts to cruise and is extremely hard to keep below 80. I'd be interested to know which gear most 2.2 drivers accelerate the most in. Fourth gear seems to make that annoying Vectra/Megane/Focus/Golf glued to my bumper become a dot in the rear view mirror with no effort when the road's 40 limit becomes 70. Fifth and sixth gear are brilliant for overtaking, motorway cruising and accelerating especially when it's a Crossfire an inch from my bumper. Made that one appear to be standing still until the driver decided to seriously dent the speed limit to pass. Still getting 50mpg as well. |
