Hopefully the economy will improve when it's run in. I haven't really pushed the car yet so the engine is probably still quite tight.

I do get the feeling though that the Civic is a car tuned for performance rather than economy. I've owned 2.2 diesels in the past (I had a new shape 2.2DTI Vectra - god foresaken unreliable wretch of a car) and that was probably better on fuel than the Civic - but had a lot less power too.
The Vectra you had being a 2.2 was Euro 3 and Euro 4 strangles cars more, and also in the past. My experiences with the same car (with the 2.0 DTi unfortunately) is that since all fuel now is City Diesel, economy will be worse as when both City Diesel and normal Diesel were available, I used to get 2-3 mpg less on City (rhyming slang!!) Diesel than the regular stuff.
My experience with the Civic is the economy is fantastic as long as you stay below 2000 rpm (66 mph GPS reading). If only I can resist the turbo power

I have that feeling too but I also think it's tuned down a bit. Toyota has 170 hp 2.2 diesel for some time now. Probably 200 hp would be possible if you would give up economy altogether.
But keep it below 2000 RPM and resist using the turbo (I can't ) and you can get a pretty good MPG for such a big engine I think.

You engine is still very new give it at least 1500 miles and you will see an constant improvement.
I found my mpg between 160 and 400 miles was an actual 28 mpg when I filled up with petrol. The car computer said it was 30mpg so it is slightly optomistic. Still I consider 28mpg for London driving to be quite good for a new engine.

On a long steady drive to Scotland over Easter, I got 61 mpg out of my 2.2. That's pretty good considering it has a Speedo Healer installed.

Take a look at this thread.

Calibrate the speedo

Basically it is a little box that sits between the speedo and the sensor and makes the speedo read correctly rather than over-read.

have you tried reseting the trip?, if not it will average all the miles you have done.

'B' trip takes an average of all the miles since the last 10,000 you hit (it resets each 10,000 miles).

'A' trip does indeed take an average since you last reset, but this includes the auto reset at fill-up (if you have turned that on)

ok, heres a one off! took this last night after fueling up - only a short journey but if you "take it easy" its really economical.

BTW normally I get about 40mpg as I have a really heavy foot.

I am sure you can get 100+ MPG if you fill up at the top of a hill.

Heheheh, nice fuel economy!

I've just got 65mpg out of nearly a full tank - ran for 660 miles (Diesel obviously). I bottled it at the end and refuelled shortly after the fuel indicator came on - reckon I may have made 700 miles on a full tank. Anyone made it past the 700 mark?

Nope - nowhere near, for my last tank I got 480 - computer said 45.4 mpg. This was mostly urban type driving though.

I am genuinely baffled by some of these figures! 112 in 1.9 miles, just after I fill up it just sits at 35 even when I coasting (in gear)....but try harder I must, and try harder I will! ...So if you hear of extreme delays on the south coast it'll be me holding everyone up!

I did cheat a bit.

Although I was doing 60/65 mph on a dual carriageway, which was pretty much all downhill, with a trip meter reset at the top, so not at all representative - just a bit of fun really.
