It seems that the 1.8 Petrol has a sweet spot of about 55MPH in top gear.

Any faster or slower and the MPG drops.

My first month of non-urban driving and no jams has only resulted in 44MPG displayed and 39MPG actual. This is only working out to be 6MPG better than my 6 cylinder IS200 that was considered thirsty. This is also using exactly the same route and conditions.

From this weekend I'm changing from BP Ultimate 97RON to BP normal 95RON to see if it makes much difference.

Let's hope it loosens up in time.

Actual consumption on my 1.8 petrol at mixed driving is 7.0 - 7.1 l/100km ~ 40 Imp.MPG
In countryside driving at mixed road quality the computer claims 5.7 l/100 km ~ 50 MPG.
Tyres: 205/66-16 conti studless winter tyres. Total car mileage 2500 km in two months.

my fuel consumption average is 53 mile per gallon on computer trip meter,
however when you sit static in traffic is flies down on downward slope so quickly . I have only done 1300 miles in my car so far i will expect it to get better as the more miles you do , what is concerning when using cruse control you would expect more miles to the gallon

i love the way the cruse control works in the Honda's compared with my last car (Citroen say no more)

with the Honda you can use it in 3rd to 6th gear with the Citroen it was crap only use it in 4th and 5th, when you accelerated by a car then you needed to rest it back on ,unlike the Honda you set it accelerate pass a car and it returns down to the speed you chose fantastic car, still have civic smile don't think it will ever go , think i will always have Honda cars from now on.

Same here too. I've done about 700 miles now and took the car on a deserted motorway at 3am last Sunday, stuck it on 75mph on the cruise, reset the mpg, and after 20 minutes at a rock-steady speed, the car was averaging a completely pathetic 40mpg. Air con was off, road was flat, and I didn't have a boot full of building materials, either.

It's all very well saying manufacturers skew the figures, but in my old Fabia vRS I got the OEM quoted figures, and better, with a 130bhp 1.9l engine. I know the Civic is heavier (both car and engine), but the drop-off is really unimpressive. I really hope this improves in the next 1000 miles or so or I'm going to regret having bought this car.

The computer does not give you an accurate M.P.G. reading. I found it to be around 4 M.P.G. over reading. The only way to get an accurate M.P.G. is to fill the tank up every time and calculate the M.P.G.

Does the computer count fuel consumption when idling at a stand still (eg red light)?

I switched to BP Ultimate Diesel (thanks for the tip Lozza) and altho its more expensive than regular diesel it does the trick and the increased economy will more than make up for your the cost.

I was getting 39.5 mpg average after 1500 miles - nice mix of A roads and motorways - hardly any sitting in traffic, and I do not drive like an idiot. Was only getting 360 miles out of a tank of fuel.

Now I have an average mpg of 46.7 after just 62 miles of 'new' fuel. Should get 460 out of this tank easily.

Cherry is still going into Honda tomorrow for some tests as to get 4 eco lights lit up I virtually have to have my foot off the accelerator and she decreases in speed... Lets see what happens...

I regularly get 40+ on a tank full in my 1.8 Millie machine, and with the performace used I'm more than happy with that.

As per a previous Charles........is that via the trip computer or from the more accurate measuring actual fuel input v actual miles completed ?

The trip computer is about 5 MPG out on 1.8's and guess which way

Which could mean you are only getting 35+

I checked my 1.8 i-Shift after a 250 mile run, by the fuel I had to put in to bring the tank back to full and it worked out at just over 43 mpg. The computer read 43.3; so I reckon it's pretty accurate.

Yep that's what I do.

Interesting that different cars trip comps produce different results!

Every week I fill up to the 'click', then wait a few seconds and drizzle a bit more in till it clicks for the second time to ensure accuracy.
I then note the trip mileage (usually around 220) and the litres put in is on the receipt they give me.

So far over the last 6 weeks the trip comp has given me a steady 43.x MPG but the 'actual' method has resulted in only 38-39MPG.

I have just changed from BP 97RON to BP 95RON and currently the trip comp is back on 43.xMPG so I will know on Sunday how it compares.

The computer is more accurate if you drive the tank empty in the same day.
How accurate it is also depends on driving style. It's silly, but accountable.
For me this boardcomputer is a nice thing to have. Give's some kind of indication anyway, but I always calculate the fuel consumption after fuel tanking.

For the 1.4 dsi the boardcompu reads 6.3 l/ 100 km ( B counter ) average after 9000 km.
This is include 'winter' period.
Latest 3 fuel fill ups where better...6.0 l / 100 km says the A counter of the Honda's compu.
My own calculator says 6.4 l / 100 km

I have a really mixed commute in to work 45miles of motorway and 13miles of town and get 48mpg regularly. If I am late not so much . However the adage is true stick your crusie on at 72-74mph(sat nav says 70mph!) on the motorway and 50+ is easy in the 2.2. as is 38mpg when lead footing.

20,000 miles since the 7th of june 06 and the economy just gets better... One thing of note with my car is it seems to prefer my use of the turbo's natural range rather than revving the bolts of it. Changing gear at about 3,500 always seems to allow for a bit of hustle and not so much drinking of the black stuff...

Well here's an example of how good the economy of the diesel can get: I was playing around with the trip computer the other day on the way home from work, and accidentally reset Trip A, the one I have set to reset automatically on refuelling. I was on a single-carriageway road, doing between 40 and 50mph behind lorries. By the time I got home some 10 miles later, the computer was showing 63.7mpg. I do keep my own records of fuel economy and I find the computer is only a couple of miles out either way.

Superb mileage...

Did a trip from Dunfermline to the Isle of Skye last weekend, clocked 532 miles on the one tank and the refuel took 40.5 Litres, in real money just under 9 gallons. equates to just under 60 mpg... Computer indicated 60.2 average mpg.. Superb..

I think that that it's immaterial really.

If my Millie only did 20 mpg I wouldn't swop it for much else on the road.

I just fill 'er up when required and I'll be happy for another tank full.

But I will check 'manually' next time and report back.

After almost 7000 miles my 2.2 Type S is getting 48.9mpg, working it out using a calculator. Civic says 47.5mpg, so it's under reading a little.

This is bog standard commuting driving, 2 hours a day (70 miles). Mixture of sitting in traffic, blasting over back roads, stuck behind stuff on A roads, and going very fast on A roads. 50mpg here we come...

I now have 9500 miles on - and average worked out tank to tank is just over 50 mpg. This ties in as near as makes no difference to trip computer readings.

At 50-55 mph when stuck in traffic can easily average over 60 mpg short term, but drops a little below 50 mpg when faster motorway work done.
