I think I must have a much heavier right foot than I thought - as, over full tank my average best has been 44.7mpg. I've filled up this eve so I'm going to see what I can get out of it this tank.
I'll also try not to use my heated seats!

On a single run of motor driving I averaged 59.6mpg which a trip of only 60 miles along the M4

Question: Are the people on here who are getting 55 + average using the turbo at all? What revs do you tend to go up to before changing gear?

1st to 2nd 2krpm
3rd to 4th 1500rpm
5th to 6th 1300rpm once warm

Ideal revs 1000rpm in 5th and 6th

Give it one blast on to a dual carrage way just to clear it out, other than that I barely breath on the accelerator.

Please note that my 73mpg run was waaaaay exceptional!

It took a huge amount of concentration and self control, and was helped by drafting every available lorry going

In normal use I am getting more like 42-44 mpg

Not as great as some, and nothing like as great as it could be if I showed a little but more restraint

But compared to the 28mpg I was getting from my TT, I'm still quids in, so I'm happy

PS fuel use is massively different at 55mph to 70mph...

If you can cope with doing 55 on a motorway - around 1,400 revs ish - you will get around mid 60mpg

Obviously this can only be done with a combination of looking about 2 miles ahead (and behind) for overtaking opportunities.
Its no good having to brake down to 50, then overtake at 60, and pretend that evens out at 55

Thanks!

This morning from a cold start with the engine running for about 5 minutes while I de-iced (know I shouldnt really do that) then a trip of 14 miles to work I managed to get up to 35.8mpg on slow stop start motorway traffic. As I had literally refuelled last night and my fuel station is about 0.5 mile from my house its a pretty undiluted result.

I noted too that there is a good 5 mile section that is on a very very very slight gradient and whilst I was only doing 55mpg on cruise only 2 eco lights were on, and at a couple of points, none whatsoever. My return leg should therefore be much better! - he says....

I have also found the trip computer is much slower to update than my previous cars, and also the Civic does actually start from 0 whereas my last car (Audi A3 2.0TDI) started from about 20mpg and went up very quickly.

What speed are you doing, cause 70mph is about 3000rpm in 6th

I'm getting about the same from my 1.8. I have seen up to 61.2 mpg on the display but that was mostly down hill driving with very light pressure on the pedal here and there! Lowest I’ve seen is around 25 mpg in second gear climbing a steep hill on my commute home. It depends on how careful you are. My car has only just covered 850 miles so isn't run in yet but I’m very happy with the figures. There about the same as my diesel Volvo s40 that I happily sacrificed for the new spaceship!!

I notice that many sporty version owners are complaining about mpg but what do they expect from a Type S or R. In my humble opinion, speed comes at the expense of economy.

The type S is no quicker than the 5 dr. its the same engine in both the petrol and diesel forms. But the highest ive ever got out of the diesel is only 45 round town and thats not often. Mostly around the 40mpg. I am lucky to get 375 miles out of a tank. On a motorway it went to around 55mpg.

the engine in the type S is the same as in the five door civic....
some people just find the mpg in the 1.8 lower then expected as the figures that honda gave as are not very correct but you seem to good a great mpg from it. I suppose this a lot of highways?

My thinking behind my last post was that sporty version owners were more inclined to ’enjoy’(read thrash) the car more often than the normal run of the mill versions. This will not be true of all owners I agree. Although the cars are fitted with the same engines, there is a difference in curb weight across the range which may account for some of the differences in the mpg that many members have encountered. Driving style, and type of roads is the main factor as no two journeys and drivers will be the same so its hard to compare in the real world unless under test conditions. The official figures as I understand are bench type tests on a static rolling road or even on an engine out of the car over various types of speeds/time durations. I have a 1.8 se which is returning around 44 mpg on average. That is much better than any petrol car weighing much less I’ve had in the past. I have also driven the 2.2 diesel and find that it requires a different style of driving than the petrol. It’s easier to light up the red lights as there is a smaller power band which combined with the slight turbo lag of the diesel makes you want to push the car harder than equivalent petrol cars. I have come from a 1.9 diesel Volvo and find the 1.8 petrol to be very nearly as economical and just as quick even though I have not yet pushed it over 4000 rpm. It’s also smother and more pleasurable to drive. The only sure way to increase MPG is to be light on the accelerator and think much further ahead on every journey to reduce hard acceleration and braking. Speed also effects mpg. 80 as apposed to 70 or 65 will have a big impact especially over a long distance

Interesting question though, is there a car on sale now, like for like that gives better economy, pleasure and reliability

Interestingly,my 2.2 Type S is more lively than my previous ES 2.2.Not by a country mile but it is noticeble, and was even on the ride home from the showroom with 3 miles on the clock.I would put this down presumably to the lighter kerbweight.

About the fuel economy, the ES would give approx 48mpg around town/a bit of open road, and 60 approx on the motorway. So far,the Type S is returning 40-43 mpg and has'nt really shifted from those figures. With less than 1000 miles on the clock,I know there's still plenty of time for improvement. If it should never change on that,I for one will not be too dissapointed, as Honda really have turned out a cracking car with this model

I agree with that. I suppose it depends on your expectations of a car which will have an effect on your satisfaction. I have to say I’m well happy with my car. I did consider a new Focus before going back to Honda purely on a cost basis. A friend of mine got a great deal on a new 1.8 zetec climate. Having looked at the two cars on paper, the civic came out on top by a fair margin but the Civic cost roughly £2000 more. Still I chose the civic and am very glad I did. The two cars don’t really compare as far as I'm concerned. Not sure about the new replacement that’s just been launched but it looks nowhere near as good as the civic. My friend by the way is green with envy and is often heard mumbling that he wished he had got a civic too. Oh dear.

Same here. 40-43 is the average amount, and I'd like to add that this is the amount I got from new, and still do now with 13K on the clock, it hasn't changed for better or worse.

Well I have noticed also that fuel consumption has dropped since we have had the darker /colder weather. I avergaed 54 mpg, now I am getting 52 mpg? Roll on the spring!

Mine wont budge above 41-42, which is a bit disappointing for a diesel?
