Noisy Diesel

First of all, let me say what a superb site this is. It really is the best source of information on the Civis by far. I have been sitting back and reading with interest all the great discussions, and now it's time to get more involved.

I think my 2.2 iCDTi is a great engine; punchy, smooth and quiet. This is also the conclusion of most road tests you see.

So, why are Fifth Gear making such a big deal about how noisy the engine is?

http://fifthgear.five.tv.ymogen.net/...el=32&x=12&y=5
and
http://fifthgear.five.tv.ymogen.net/...section=&show=

Does anyone else think it is noisy?

S'funny.. I complained about the whine of the turbo at first, but it's occasionally there not all the time.

Seems very quiet to me.
A bit rattly when starting in the morning, but soon quietens down and certainly no lounder than my Accord petrol in normal running.

Could they of possibly been comparing it to the same engine in the Honda Accord which is a lot quiter due to more insulation and slight differences in the engine?

Mines deffo quiter when compared to other engines. Id even go as far as to say its quiter than some petrols!!!

That's how I read it - just not as good as the Accord. Best diesel I've had (several VW 4's and an Audi V6).

When I test drove the diesel, I was almost put off by the low speed whine that it made. It was such an awful noise.

Thankfully, there were the other benefits of a diesel and I chose one over the petrol. Strangely my own doesn't make anywhere near as much of a whine.

And the overall noise is nothing like its peers in Fords, Peugeots and VWs.

StGeli, exactly the same for me - my one doesn't have the whine (but the demo did). When I spotted my car in the pound ready for prep, it had a large note in it saying "heat shield mod applied", and I've always wondered if there has been a mod to reduce the noise. Asked the dealer, but they had no idea.

I've definately got the whine as did the demo car, I just assumed it was a characteristic of the design and lived with it,
but it seems from your experiences that some do and some dont, now wondering whether I need to investigate!
Would like to hear from more diesel owners before going back to dealer.

Thanks to all for your comments, highly valued as is this excellent forum.

I used to have a noisy diesel (Focus) but since getting the Civic lots of people who I show it off too are suprised it is a diesel.

"Is it, wow it doesn't sound like one".

I should clarify here. I'm not talking about the slight whine from the turbo, this is a very clear/loud whine from the engine, usually in the first 10mins of the journey. It came and went, sometimes it did it, sometimes not.

I don't think it's something to worry about, but not all of the diesel civics I've driven had it.

I have the whiney one, but the noise is no worse than the power steering on the Minis. I find at low revs the Civic sounds like the little 3 cyclinder diesel in the Seats and VW's.

I understand fully basegreen, this is not turbo type whine which can be heard as turbo spins up with increased revs (and sounds great IMO)
more like a drive belt type sound especially noticable at low revs / speed.

Yep. That's it. It's intermittant. I posted on the ultra-quiet blog beta about this and just got someone saying the only whining noise was me. Lovely.

I'm pretty certain that it's the cam belt on the right (the turbo whine - well more of a whoosh really - comes and goes with power demand), and I do know that an over-tightened belt will whine. Maybe the dealer can check the tightness. If the car was outside (J pinched it, again) I'd try and devise a tightness test so we can compare.

It would be good to have a "meet", so that we can compare car for car.

Got the car back and - strangest thing - the whine has totally gone. Like, complete silence and smoothness. Oh well....

Like I said, it's intermittant. Pretty sure it will come back again.

Still gone... I wonder if the belt loses some of its tension over the first few thousand miles (and relaxes to the correct tension), causing the whine to stop.
