Cat smell in car when accellerating

there seems to be a smell coming into the cabin through the air con when accellerating down a sliproad to join a motorway, at first i just thought it was from the car infront but today there was no one in front and it was there again , i`ve had a quick look at the exhaust manifold after the cat and theres a pipe comes off and goes into a block with an actuator on top then comes out of the left hand side and goes under the alternator to who knows where , does anyone know what the actuator is for, is it for the vtec?, is this opening at high revs and leaking causing the smell?
any help or opinions welcomed :P

Cheers Martyn

Well i`ve answered one question which brings me to another, the pipe to the left is from the cooling system to the water pump, so where do the exhaust gasses go???

The pipe could be the egr - this won't make any smells!

When you give the car full throttle, the aircon turns off - can you recreate the smell by switching the aircon off? Or at least the compressor (by going into econ mode - I don't have a sport, sorry).

Aircon can pong when switched off - it's nasties that grow in the moisture in the system, but it shouldn't happen to such a new car.

I assumed that it was something to do with working the engine hard in hot weather.

Its a sort of gearboxy smell in my opinion (if indeed it's the same thing)...

6000rpm, the stuff of dreams for us dieselies.

Do any of you actually own a cat that could have crawled under the bonnet of an evening without you knowing. It happened to my mother-in-law, unfortunately series 2 Land Rovers running on African fuel make a hell of a noise on starting, it was several days before the air dried remains were found after noticing a bad smell.

Just a thought. I know its usually an "eggy" smell, but could it be the Catalyst ?.

I have had a smell as well (but would have described it more like singed feathers) and it seems to occur around 6000 or more as well.
