civic automatic
Hi all
Iv decided and automatic is for me. However I really dont know which to buy?? HOnda s I shift is new and im concerned about reliability and faults?? Can members pls give me feedback on their civic 1.8 automatics please. Other options are the seat Leon DSg or Golf Dsg, both are excellent and realiable. Can Honda compete in the automatic market. Is the I shift reliable in the 1.8 and what are the fuel performance figures?? Thank You Andy |

Having had two Honda automatics (Accord and previous Civic - both conventional and excellent automatics) - I would have liked another automatic. However I also wanted the economy and pull of the diesel, so went that way. I was also somewhat nervous that the i-shift is new technology for Honda.
Having read all the threads on here - my current view is that I would not purchase an i-shift. Why? Well - there seem too many people with problems to be just isolated cases, and whilst some seem quite happy - there are a significant number who are not happy, and Honda doing major mods that are not able (for whatever reason) to be retrospectively applied worries me. I would think very carefully before going i-shift, and if you intend to resell, the car at some time - think residuals too. Its your choice - but do read all the threads on here before taking the plunge! |

My i-Shift has been faultless. Brilliant system but it is an automated manual and not an automatic in the general sense. It does take a couple of weeks to get used to it but when you do it gives you the best of both worlds; an auto when in traffic or when you want to take it easy, and the paddles or stick changes when you want a more sporty ride.
Excellent system, I love it. |

The changes were imperceptible. I wish they could fit it to the Civic. |

Had my i-Shift for 9 months and it has been faultless - unlike the well posted problems with the rear shocks, fuel filler cap release & windscreen top seal to name but a few.
Drove a 2007 Toyota Yaris 1.3 the other day with their MultiMode transmission and thought it a very nice little car. It has been available longer than Honda's i-Shift and I have not heard of any problems with it at all. This is an automated manual similar to the i-Shift only minus the steering wheel paddles. In auto mode it requires the same treatment as the i-Shift in lifting slightly between up changes. Being familiar with the i-Shift, is was all very natural to make smooth progress. However, in its sequential mode, for some unknown reason, the gear change was the exact opposite to the i-Shift - gearlever back to change up and forward to change down! Japanese consistency! Got me thinking afterwards, WHICH is the most logical????? |

Ignore 3rd Honda's reply ( yes some people are unhappy but they would appear to be in the minority)
as for our car we are very happy 5 weeks on not problems - you will notice that it is not as smooth as a normal automatic ( because it's an automated manual box) Only you can really decide after a long testdrive |

That is just one of the benefits in having an automated manual - you would never achieve that from a normal torque converted auto/ CVT .
Even better mpg and lower CO2 emissions than the equivalent manual not to mention a rested left foot - got to be worth that initiation period in getting acclimatised to the i-Shift's auto mode - and even that is not required if you stick to the sequential shift. Choices, choices, choices. The only minus is a tad slower to 62mph - big deal! |

i would buy a civic over a GOLF BUT not with teh current automatic situation. i want a true automatic. Honda should have bought a true alternative to the DSG to the market both in petrol and diesel.
The fact they havent is not good enough from HOnda. They bought out a fantastic car but no true automatic. ANyone know when HOnda will sort this??? |

The DSG costs double the cost of a i Shift. I have driven both and yes the DSG is good but still is hit with the same 'problems' that i-Shift does. It is just a case of getting to know how to drive a i-Shift. I love mine! |

No, the manual is faster, but not that much to worry about!
I test drove the i-shift and did not like it. I wanted a full auto, not an automated manual. I loved it in manual mode, but in auto mose the shifts were not too smooth, and some of it's gear choices were questionalble at best. It pulled away from a near stop at RABs in 2nd a couple of times, with the robotic clutch slipping like crazy. It didn't make for a good getaway! I just found I was better at choosing and changing gear compared to when it was in auto mode, which dissapointed me a little. I am happy with my descision to stay manual, especially as the 'box is so nice to use! |

I have had full auto's since 1988 and I love them.
The i-shift has been another experience though. It is not an "automatic" no matter how Honda advertise it. When it is gear change time it cuts the power, changes the gear, then gives you power back. Being as you don't know exactly when this is going to happen you tend to be slightly thrown forward when it happens and it feels odd and catches you out. As you progress through the gears it gets better and the small lurch is not as noticeable. The most publicised and the worst bit is the pseudo 'kickdown' feature that basically fails miserably. There have been a few times that I have had to abandon an overtaking manoevere because it hasn't changed down quick enough and I've no power in reserve. Approaching roundabouts is the worst, when you put your foot down to speed up and blend into a gap there is no power because it fails to respond quick enough. I've got used to it now and it will last me for the next 3 years but I would hesitate to get another i-shift, but I dislike manuals even more. How could they improve it?

All these guys getting upset with that i-Shift.
I just poodle along and it always seems to be in the correct gear. When Lady H. isn't around I drive a bit more 'lively' and use the paddles as well. I'm at one with the i-Shift. "Found out why Hitler killed himself, it was the gas bill!" Charles H. |

I don't look at my watch when accelerating, but I know that someone a while back said that, flat out, it changes into top at 113 mph.
I don't generally race around too much. If there is a difference between the manual and the i-Shift who cares? As long as you enjoy what you've got. And I enjoy what I've got. "These are the good old days. Just you wait and see!" Charles H. Last edited by Charles_Harding; 26th May 2007 at 11:38. |

By the way Fabian.
Welcome to the site. Make sure you have a good test drive with the i-Shift. I'm definately a fan but some others aren't! "The permisive society never existed. I know 'cos I've spent my entire life looking for it!" Charles H. |
