Oil consumption

SO,
I had my car serviced at Brown Bros in Peebles on Valentines Day with 42something thousand miles on the clock, its now got 44thousand and my oil light has been on for low oil??

Having checked all about, there is no leak, surely I cant have burnt off that much in 2000 miles???

Please discuss, anyone else had this issue?

Have you actually got low oil or just the warning light ?
There is an ECU update for ghost oil sensor

I was travelling motorway at the time, PI-PINGthe oil light comes on...

I waited the book stated three mins before checking oil and spot on the Min mark
Garage didnt have 0-30w (sigh) so topped up with 5-30w and will be checking it first thing tomorrow morning.
After topping up no oil light again for the remaining 150 miles.

I normally know my oil, I didnt check it recently as its only just been serviced...

i would have expected so! is it possible that it was underfilled at service? my grandad told me years ago that the oil consumption accelerates as the level gets lower

mine is basicly the opposite, after 22K km the oil hasnt gotten lower AT ALL, not a drop
which is odd as the dealer told me to keep a lookout for the oillevel getting lower as it is very thin (0w30)

Similar to the orginal poster, I had my car serviced towards the back end of last year.

At the Service interval it had not seemed to have used a drop, and had done 10,500 miles. I am slightly slack in checking it frequently, but on my last check it was about 2/3rd -1/2 the way down the stick (which was about 2-3 weekends ago), when today my low oil warning light came on. I have only done about 3,000 miles since the last service, so would this be about right? I also only put a litre in, and it seems to filled it up to the correct position? I would have thought it required more if the warning light was on?

I was just wondering why pre-service it didnt show to use a drop, but post service, it has had the warning light come on in 3,000 miles.

Thanks in advance.

I think we've got both, low oil level and low oil pressure warning lights

Sorry Ash, was this meant for me (I dont have a diesel but came straight after my post)? May well have been the low pressure light (but the oil level was definately down).

If not meant for me, sorry.

No was a question for Dielsel Civics owners. Have the FN2's got a low oil level warning light then?

You'll probably find you only have a low pressure light. Low pressure is caused by low levels of oil, so they basically mean the same thing. Well... dont take that word for word, there are some differences, but if that light shows up, then check your oil!

Cheers Fonejacker. And you reckon its only a litre to fill it up?

Any reason why it may have gone down so quicly as compared to last time?

How many miles has it done? Its sounds to me like it could be the cause of a high mileage engine, low oil pressure is often due to a combination of worn main and rod bearings and crankshaft journals. The oil pump itself does not create pressure. It produces flow and the resistance to that flow produces pressure. the bearings wear, clearances increase allowing increased flow which reduces pressure.

Yes, 1 litre is the difference between MIN and MAX

It has only done 12,500 miles. So not sure if that is considered high or low? Its about 18 months old.

I have filled it up with 1 lt, but now seems to be above the maximium? should I take it into the nearest garage and get it sorted, or will this be ok?

Cheers again.

Depends how much we are talking. Over the maximum is never good, although a smidge over isnt going to cause a problem. If we are talking an cm or inch, then yeah, I would get it to a garage asap. Best bet is to take a picture of the dipstick and add it on here.

Regarding your car, that's low mileage, so wouldn't explain the low oil pressure or relate to the above so forget that.

Have you heard knock's from the engine at all? I am assuming thats a no! I just want to make sure no damage to the engine has occurred.

If the oil has come down rapidly then expected, then this could be due to a failed gaskets and/or seals. Sometimes your oil filter will leak if not fitted correctly so check that also!

However, if its an oil burning problem, this means the valve guides, rings and/or cylinders are worn or damaged and more costly repairs are needed.

Either way, get yourself booked into the garage for safe measure... Or keep tab's on your oil level over the next few weeks, check daily, record daily. It shouldn't move much, if at all over a couple of weeks....
